Even with a Western-centric view, I tend to disagree. And from a non-US viewpoint, absolutely inaccurate! Hans Rosling makes the case in "200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes".

I have noticed the same thing. My wife and I love the history and connections of words, but few others we encounter share our fascination. And being exposed and sensitive to multiple languages just makes it more fun!
