The Asian night market in Kitchener is phenomenal. Probably one of the best events to close king street. Even the permanent stores have lineups onto the street.

If we are taking the 51st state threat seriously, and expect it to be through economic means, we should seriously reconsider the IMF (2 blocks from the white house) and the world bank (1 block from the whitehouse). They won’t take our side.

I visited Seestadt a few years ago in summer and my take away was that the big park was pretty well-used. And the internal roads were quite calm and pedestrianized. I don’t disagree about the hard scaping though, but it would probably feel different when the trees grow in.

It is exhaustively researched and recorded. For example, all of this information about a neighbourhood. As a planner, I’ve never seen any sources that identify potted plants, road widths, parked bicycles, building entrances next to existing uses.

The book discusses how planning theories and ideas fit into Tokyo’s development, and asserts that the urban design is not simply a result of culture.

They describe the typologies of the city at a macro level, and then identify several notable themes: yokocho alleyways, Zakkyo (vertically integrated mixed-use buildings, under track infills, ankyo streets (covered streams/ canals), and dense low-rise neighbourhoods

I just read Emergent Tokyo, by Jorge Almazan + Studio Lab.
A++ book for planners and urbanisms.
I think it represents a gold standard for how to write a planning book about a city. Lots of illustrations, examples, exceptionally deep research, context, and discussion of planning policy

When people say they want to encourage "tiny homes" as a way to make more affordable housing, this is what I picture. 74 square feet with nice fixtures, a bathtub and costing around 32,000 euros.

Countries with the highest average wealth per capita vs. Countries with the highest median wealth per capita.
Americas median wealth is less than Italy, and Italy has healthcare.

Looks like these houses next to the Market are on the market for redevelopment. It always seems to be the affordable homes that get redeveloped first.
From what I can tell, it’s new Canadian families with kids and seniors who live here.
