Update on the Shingles…

The antiviral meds are really doing their job. At this point, three and a half days in, I’m at a point of mild discomfort rather than severe. The small patches of welts/rash have been small enough to protect with bandaids, so they’re not bad. Still, it sucks. Get vaccinated.

What the fuck… why is the guy wearing a beret?
November 5, 2025 at 5:24 AM
And something I find kinda interesting about it... is that it's a nerve issue. The muscle and whatnot, even the none inflamed skin areas... are fine. They just feel NOT fine. Kinda wild. Kinda funny, in a really dark sorta way.

I won't share photos, but I've been slapping band-aids over the blisters so that any touch sensation is constant and eventually the nerves start to ignore it, but also in case they leak, the fluid is somewhat contained. And I wear loose long sleeve shirts to hide all of this.

GET THE VACCINE! No bs, no underselling it, it's fucking bad. And like so many things, you can be the most careful, clean, stress-free person... and if you've had chicken pox, you've got a 1/3 chance of developing it.
November 2, 2025 at 10:41 PM
Wrap up: this isn't fun and is one of the most painful experiences I've ever endured. Half the time I want to scream, the other half I want to throw up. I'm on anti-viral meds and some small doses of ibuprofen for pain management. I want to believe I'm going to be fine, but man... no bueno.

8. A long term potential side effect of shingles is something called Postherpetic neuralgia, where the intense pain persists for months or years after the flareup.

This also sounds really bad, and if it's just the same pain, it's near debilitating. I will say this again: GET VACCINATED.
November 2, 2025 at 10:32 PM
7. The whole process of developing shingles and them going away can take 4-6 weeks.

I'm 2 weeks in, so I have SO MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO in November.

After the sores drain, they will dry out and scab over, and will likely still be itchy. Like with a tattoo or a sunburn, DON'T SCRATCH.
November 2, 2025 at 10:28 PM
6. Shingles ALSO has a vaccine!

People over 50 are encouraged to get vaccinated. This is the ONLY time I've wished I was that old. For older folks, this can be potentially life threatening, so make sure your parents are vaccinated too!
November 2, 2025 at 10:27 PM
Another important bit! Apparently chicken pox has a vaccine! Amazing! Make sure you and your kids are vaccinated. Thank me later, cuz this sucks real bad.
November 2, 2025 at 10:26 PM
5. Apparently, the blisters/rash will eventually burst and drain. THIS IS WHAT IS POTENTIALLY CONTAGIOUS, but only to people who haven't had chicken pox, which is what they'll develop if caught.

Important part here: Most people get these as a child, but as an adult they can be much more dangerous.

4. Dr.s will tell you to get an appt. and start treatment within 72 hours of showing symptoms.

If you've never had them before, and the rash hasn't shown up, the first sign is extreme pain on your skin, where barely touching it is excruciating. This happens, go to Urgent Care ASAP. Thank me later!
November 2, 2025 at 10:23 PM
3. Eventually a rash will begin to form.

For me, its these tiny blisters, but not a full on red everywhere situation. Except the two small patches on my back. Those are quite cross with me.

IT IS VERY ITCHY! Like a tattoo session that never ends or never heals.
November 2, 2025 at 10:20 PM
I cannot begin to express how much this description of the intensity of pain is underselling the real world experience.

It's like your skin is actively on fire and falling off of you. It's really bad. For the last two days, it's felt like my hand was splitting in half.

THIS IS NOT A GOOD TIME.

2. Shingles are INCREDIBLY PAINFUL.

To try to put this sensation into words... it's like... waves of the most painful sunburn you've ever had along bands of skin, called a Dermatones. My flare up is along the C8 and T1 dermatones on my left side. Specifically, the T1 area that rubs my torso.

I had chicken pox 35 years ago, and this little bastard of a virus just decided to check in with me. How thoughtful!
November 2, 2025 at 10:09 PM
1. Shingles isn't something that you catch from other people, per say. It's the same virus (varicella zoster) as chicken pox! It's literally chicken pox hiding in your central nervous system, so if you had chicken pox before, you have a chance of developing shingles.

I want to use this opportunity to dispel any rumors, myths, or misinformation relating to this ailment.

Fairaday. Haven’t been on in a long while. Might pick it up more next year if time permits. Alas, such is the consequences of having a day job.
