There is an aggressive asymmetry between what information platforms and data centers have about us, and what information we're able to have about them
hive-mind, know of any research/academic work that has detailed the various ways social media/large platforms have made audits/critical investigation of these platforms practically impossible. exuberant API fees, access only to partial data even when you can pay fee, retaliation again auditors, etc

“Of course, we have to teach our students about AI technologies. Teaching about AI technologies should be just like how we teach ‘no smoking’ or the causal links between lung cancer and smoke; yet, we do not teach students how to roll cigarettes and smoke them.”

Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia
Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in the 21st with social media. For these col...

sad way to be an academic if you think a world you might want (not the past; a better present) is impossible: it's basically an abdication of the duty of the academic, which inter alia is about creation of new knowledge to — yes, why not? — help us progress to a better world

I was laid off from Teen Vogue this week, alongside multiple other phenomenal team members.

At our Summit, I was asked how it felt to be 1 of 2 Black women left and what that meant for representation. Now, there are no Black women at Teen Vogue and that is incredibly painful to think about.

Teen Vogue has become a top-tier political journalism authority and doing this the day before election day is just cruel.
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

Excellent paper. I'm increasingly convinced that students are not dedicated to GenAI junk, but if they're being drowned in it, some may feel like they have no choice but to use it. It was the players who ultimately got steroids out of baseball; students will need to help get GenAI out of education.
