people love skenes so much they keep putting him on TV to shill stuff despite him being an absolute black hole of charisma in front of a camera, we are doomed to read these headlines until the trade actually happens

this isn't, like, cherington declaring that he won't trade skenes as some sort of triumphant declaration, it's because people won't shut the fuck up about the pirates trading him.

i think this is a case where the media is wishcasting a skenes trade very hard and cherington gets asked about it all the time

joe mauer that wasn't a hometown hero and if instead of a head injury that ended his career he had a bunch of smaller issues that slowly added up to a long tail of diminished effectiveness

it's one of those things; if he had kept his average around .300, he might have hung around on the ballot long enough for someone to point out that a catcher with a .366 OBP and 2000 games caught is crazy. those low batting averages in his last couple years really hurt him.

(i would not be hugely surprised if jason kendall got a longer look from a veteran's committee at some point; he probably was not a good framer, but he was a much better player than 0.5% one and done deserves)

that same list includes 11 hall of fame hitters (wagner, clemente, paul waner, vaughan, stargell, carey, clarke, kiner, traynor, mazeroski, parker) barry bonds, and andrew mccutchen, who will probably live on the HOF fringe for a while.

if you have an eight-leg parlay that hinges on a pitcher spiking pitches to andy pages, i have some big questions about the other seven legs of that parlay

based on clase's involvement with finlete and everything in that indictment, there's basically no reason to NOT be skeptical that he allowed more earned runs in the 2024 playoffs than he did during the entire 2024 season.
