A 2004 internal Nintendo DS diagnostic cartridge contained various graphical tests, among them this "Rotating Mario Cube". A faulty unit would not be able to properly rotate the cube.

Yeah, other teams have had a bad experience with them as well. Dear Esther was remade in Unity for licensing reasons. Some other team IIRC nearly got bankrupted by middleware Valve didn't tell them they had to license.

I know just about everyone on this dev team and can double-confirm that they've been sitting here waiting for Valve to just respond for years.

A lot of pretty crazy stuff is going on in the TF2 mapping world right now!

One of the coolest is that shadows on every map are now way smoother! No more jaggy ugly shadows, TF2 now defaults to the smoother look, and this applies to every map without needing recompile

I just released a new tool: a "texture browser" for UE5.5 that presents materials as square thumbnails instead of spheres. Like a 90s texture browser. Much better for level designin'. Has favourite searches, quick access to recently-used materials, etc.

way too many people are blaming unreal engine for every new video game looking the same when they should be blaming lack of art direction. not even strictly a money issue, indies can make radically different looking things in UE cheaply, but _especially_ big moneyed AAA failing to art direct is wild
