This man is goals
50 years ago the BBC filmed this incredible documentary about a Scotsman named Big Jim who regularly rode a bicycle 22 miles through the Highlands to visit a friend. This was his 105th trip, and he got completely blitzed along the way.

New way to recycle bourbon barrels just dropped
Walking among the trolls takes about an hour, and that hike is part of Dambo’s goal. “My art is about getting people off of their screens and getting children out to experience all that magic that I experienced growing up, like searching in the forest,” he said.
Into the Woods With the Dix Park Trolls
Danish artist Thomas Dambo's family of five recycled troll sculptures now cavort across the Raleigh park's 308 acres.

BTW I'm officially on maternity leave but I will carve out the time to write an editorial about why this move sucks for whisky drinkers, and the broader industry, if anyone wants to commission it.
Just saw that Compass Box launched an AI to make whisky recommendations, apparently trained by the company's whisky makers. So now we know the direction of the post-Glaser era, and it's a total bummer.

This, and nothing else, has inspired me to visit Laurinburg
One of the first myths we demolished about North Carolina's ABC system when we set out to rank stores statewide is that each store is the same as the next. Many thanks to @davidwondrich.bsky.social for weighing in on a cocktail guide only found in Scotland County: thefoodsection.com/the-best-rea...

I just love the idea of drinking Colt 45 from a glass
I forgot I was meant to be putting up some of my more recent glassware finds. Here's a blast from the past from Colt 45's short existence here - it's etched as 1980. Nostalgia can take many forms ...

It wouldn’t have been coke in that neighborhood but man, I bet the drugs were way cheaper back then too. (Back then = 2009)
That typo had me thinking you were getting 16 lines of coke for a dollar 😅
There was a time when I could go to the C Town off Walton Avenue in the Bronx and get 16 lines for a dollar. SIX. TEEN.

Fascinating thread about the evolution of alcohol metabolism in primates.
Last week a paper came out, showing that chimpanzees daily consume significant amounts of alcohol. A thread where I walk through why the paper matters, then the paper itself.

Can confirm, we had lunch once and i he went deep into talking about his grandfather who was into the occult and how that influenced Dan’s artistic career and other endeavors. Fascinating, cool, kind man.
A producer told me once she has to warn young crewmembers to avoid being alone with Aykroyd. "Not because he's a creep, he's a gentleman. But if you let him strike up a conversation the next thing we know all the PAs will be huddled in his dressing room learning how humans evolved from dolphins."
I love Dan Aykroyd because he has very clearly entered the stage in his life where he is going to make sure everyone knows about his special interests and he has the profile and resources to do it in a high profile manner. You are GOING to hear about rocks, dinosaurs, vodka, and ghosts dammit.

As an American whiskey writer who’s gone on weird press trips/to OTT events, some of the details in here are all too familiar. Others made my eyes pop. Kudos to Claire for recognizing in advance what a shitshow this was bound to be and declining to be part of it.
Hello BlueSky... I kind of forgot about you today. Anyway, have a read, share etc before the attention gets too much and I take it down....
