One striking example is The Beetlewing Dress that Ellen Terry wore as Lady MacBeth in 1888.

The dress was designed to invoke fear. The beetle wings were used to create the effect of serpent scales.

Let’s talk about jewel beetles. Whether the blonde woman meant this type of bug or was intending all of this, there’s some very interesting stuff here.

They are very shiny bugs who show up in many different colors, including wintergreen, and often have glossy black (onyx) contrasting bits.
