This rhetoric, enslaved people learned skills that contributed to their betterment, is a big part of prison "reform" on the right and left. While they're in jail they've gone to school, learned skills, etc. as if they could not have done those things without being incarcerated or enslaved.
“Picked a fight” is quite the euphemism. Trying to insinuate that slaves “benefited” from slavery is horrific and ahistorical.
