There'd have been some odd coalitions in the struggle to do so. Vestigial Federalists and Lowland/Tidewater southerners would both have fought it.

I could run an APUSH class for a week on this one without breaking a sweat.

Yeah, it would not have survived the turn in American politics we usually label as Jacksonian...

Not normally a fan of the Old Democracy (i've answered "Conscience Whig" on questionnaires -- but the Old Democracy would have put paid to a hereditary senate....

I was always amazed at how many distinct ethnic neighborhoods there were - this'd be late 70's - in such a small area. Great storefront restaurants for poor college students.

Worcester has a special place in my heart.

They pack a lot of 'urban' into a very modest sized city. In all kinds of ways.

The old inflatable Orson the Bear from the factory roof used to get 'invited' to Holy Cross parties. The present rigid plastic, entirely too buff bear up there now was designed to be harder to borrow.

Taught in rural/exurban Maine for years. Gang signs. I remember that. Had a bod in from the staties to talk to us about it.

(I went to high school in Dorchester, had taught in Roslindale, and subbed in Eastie -- so let us just say, eyes were rolled...)
