Just a Chess Punk, trying not to bore people to death, while I try to improve at chess.

@iszi.com I’ve just listening to this recent episode of the Terrible Lizards podcast, but when I looked at the thumbnail I couldn’t help but wonder why @davehone.bsky.social was wearing a bra? I soon realised my mistake, but it does look very odd! 😂

Just finished the Chess Journeys tactical workbook by @drscull.bsky.social on @chessable.com and absolutely loved it. I would thoroughly recommend it for any #chesspunks under 1600. I really hope he is going to do a sequel, I feel that I have learned a lot from this course. 💪

Just finished this. It’s a great book on a topic that isn’t covered much, but which is incredibly important. I found some of the puzzles a bit easy, but it’s a great introduction for players rated under 1100.

As #chesspunks we are always told we don’t need to work harder, we need to work smarter, to get the most out of our study time.

Top tip, before you spend 15 minutes trying to solve a puzzle, check if it’s white or black to move! 🤦‍♂️

@drscull.bsky.social I know you are always looking for resources to become better at defensive techniques in chess. Have you come across this? I haven’t started it yet, but I’ve heard good things about it.

Just finished reading this and thoroughly enjoyed it. Full of information, inspiration and advice for anyone looking for ways that can improve at chess or get more enjoyment out of the game. Definitely worth a read! 👍

SfBF part 11 (2nd try)

Memorabilia from the 1972 WC match on display in the Laugardalsholl sports centre, including a program signed by both players.

I was lucky enough that a member of staff very kindly offered to show me around.

This is definitely not the match that anyone was predicting!

Is Home Alone a Christmas film? Yes!

Home Alone is just a remake of Die Hard, but set in a house and without the machine guns! End of story! 👍

I’m very confused, my wife sent me her Christmas list and there are some things on it, that look like books, but the don’t seem to have anything to do with chess? Very odd! 🤔

SfBF part 10

The original entrance to the Laugardalsholl sports centre, still as it was in 1972, when the spectators and players entered the building.

Obviously I prefer algebraic notation and find it easier, but I honestly don’t think that descriptive notation, though slightly awkward and inconvenient, is actually that hard and can easily be learnt with a little bit of practice. I don’t understand what all the fuss is about? 🤔

SfBF part 9

The other companion on my trip was The Match of All Time, by G Thorarinsson, who was head of the Icelandic chess federation at the time. It is a fascinating insight into the match and the back stage drama. Definitely worth a read for anyone interested in the 1972 WC.

SfBF part 8

The Laugardalsholl sports centre in Reykjavik, where the rescheduled drawing of lots took place on Thursday 6th July. Fischer picked a black pawn, so had black in the first game. The match finally started on Tuesday 11th July.

SfBF part 7

Bobby Fischer stayed in room 470 of the Hotel Loftleidir, now the Berjaya Reykjavik Natura Hotel. This 3 room suite, know as the Gimli suite was sadly booked during our stay, so we were unable to view it, or stay in it.

SfBF part 6

When Bobby Fischer finally arrived in Iceland, he was initially taken to a brand new house which had been set aside for him, but he was unhappy with the accommodation and moved to the Hotel Loftleidir, where he stayed for the majority of the tournament.

SfBF part 5

The National Theatre of Iceland, in Reykjavik, where the opening ceremony for the 1972 WC match took place on 1st July. Controversial Bobby Fischer was not in attendance as he was refusing to leave the United States at the time.

SfBF part 4

The constant companion on my recent Iceland trip!

I can see why people rave about it, it’s like the ancestor of Steps Method. I think would be really helpful for players under 1200. Thoroughly recommended!

SfBF part 3

The Saga hotel in Reykjavik. Spassky and his entourage stayed here, in the Presidential suite during the 1972 WC match.

SfBF part 2.

As well as being the International airport, Keflavik is also home to a US military base. In 1972 this was the site of the only bowling alley in Iceland. During the match Bobby Fischer would often visit the base for “games” of bowling and steak dinners.

Just tidying up and I randomly found this toy that one of my children had left on the kitchen table. It has to be a good sign, right?

Searching for Bobby Fischer (SfBF) a personal journey - part 1.

Keflavik airport in Iceland, where Boris Spassky and his entourage arrived on 21 June 1972 and Bobby Fischer eventually arrived at 7am on 4 July 1972, ahead of their World Championship match.
