Just trying to figure out how to make the most of what seems to be a short time here on Earth.
The earliest pow I've experienced in Oregon. #OregonHC

Sure feels like we are in the "let them eat cake" phase now.

To explore the #OlympicNP is an experience like no other. From high alpine peaks to rainforests and rugged shorelines it is an absolute gem, even when compared to all our other national parks. And oddly, often more accessible to #OregonHC than people in Washington due to a chance of geography.

Finally lived out my little dream of sleeping overnight in the McKenzie Pass Observatory (accessible by bicycle), and was rewarded with a dreamy sunrise. #OregonHC

For someone with such incredible strength, who regularly solo mountaineers and eats multi-day backpacking trips for breakfast, it was a major adjustment to deal with weakness and pain for several years. As her father, I felt so helpless to do anything except but lend an ear.

It’s been challenging for my daughter to stay positive as a couple health issues struck simultaneously.

I was honored to be asked to “guide” a friend up Mount Whitney, a first attempt for both of us. We worked together really well and although it was challenging to the extreme, we prepared well, made excellent plans, and demonstrated solid decision-making on the route.

Spring ushers in a narrow window of lush scenery to Oregon’s desert canyons. For about a month, the wet earth and steady sun feeds a diverse ecosystem, with grass at the foundation and bears and wolves at the top of the food pyramid.#OregonHC #PNW

Our poetry, music and art-themed backpacking trip was a great success. We bonded over the challenges and laughed around the campfire at night. Every person was a gem that I would happily travel with again.#OregonHC

Parenting takes way more patience than you might expect. After 20 years of false starts, I finally got this kid really enjoying the slopes. Now I just need to teach the other one!

I disagree. It actually feels more and more like I live in the 47th Oblast (or State) of Russia, with our dear leader taking orders from above.

I’d like to say I’m not watching the SuperBowl because the orange dude is attending, but the reality is that I just have a lot more interesting things to do, like helping one of my wonderful daughters uplevel her ski skills.

Wow, so it was never about immigration…. If some white people are suffering, they are totally welcome as immigrants.

Logged onto Facebook momentarily to find a bunch of weird political content supporting right-wing conspiracy theories in my feed. Make of that what you will, but its a notable change in the last few months.

My partner, a healthcare provider, has discovered this is the only way that she can access pretty common-place medical advice that has been scrubbed from the CDC website!

In case you are wondering how all this nonsense is going to affect you, my partner, an amazing nurse practitioner dedicated to helping Americans of all kinds live their best life, noticed that a huge chunk of medical recommendations that she uses on a daily basis were stripped off the CDC site.

That one time I told everyone we were attempting the Tatoosh Traverse and we ended up just randomly traversing an old abandoned trail that was definitely not the Tatoosh Traverse, as I learned later. #OregonHC

Having a baby in this day and age is an act of defiance. I have great admiration for the men and women brave enough to travel a road so full of uncertainty. I’ll do whatever I can to make it a little easier.

After 8 years, I returned to the scene of the crime and attempted the Mystery Trail in the Gorge. It’s a complete mess - choked by slide alder and entangled with deadwood from burnt trees. It’s going to be 30 years before this is going to be practical again, and maybe longer.

Living large but feeling small. I’m excited about the new social media options that are taking root in 2025 that don’t require you to surrender your content to anyone else. Join me on Bluesky and very soon, Flashes, for photo and video sharing.
