Let me get this straight.

Today, Trump blew up the economy then skipped town to hang out with Saudis at a golf tournament instead of receiving the four soldiers who died in Lithuania??

Everyone wants there to be a grand scheme behind all of this but the terrible truth is that extremely stupid people are in charge and they have a fanatical devotion to wrong, childlike concepts of society and economics cooked up by right wing radio hosts in order to sell tainted dietary supplements

Google alerts me to any news with the words “VW Bus” in it.

Frequently, it alerts me to obits like this:

“He loved traveling throughout America and Europe and exploring various countries in a 1969 Volkswagen Bus with his family.”

Some day, I’ll be in an obit just like it, except mine is a 1971.

I came through Immigration at LAX recently. The Immigration agent was livid; my Global Entry had, unbeknownst to me, expired.

He sent me back to go through the “regular” line. I was very embarrassed.

I try to renew. “Not eligible” it says. Why?

My Global Entry permit doesn’t expire until 2027.

I have traveled a bit. This month, I have spent much of my time either going through metal detectors, napping to fight off jet lag or just wandering around, but not “sightseeing”. I like to see normal people in average neighborhoods doing stuff. And, to be honest, I really like window shopping. 1/2

I once read that the Chinese have an expression that “you can always fool a foreigner”. While international traveling is relatively straightforward, there are nuances that trip me up.

Today’s example: the taxi rank befuddled me. Took me awhile to figure it out, as I am a foreigner.

A foolish one.

I’m sitting in a bus station in Anatolia. It’s early morning and below freezing. I am drinking tea and eating a Simit. The proprietor is asking questions in Turkish. We use Google translate to communicate. He advises me to get a second, Turkish, wife. I explain that I have enough problems as it is.

My inbox is currently overflowing with recipes for (mostly) traditional Thanksgiving food. Those “awful concoction” recipes are temporarily on hiatus.

I’m referring to otherwise familiar recipes where ingredient lists suddenly include miso, cauliflower, kale, chili crisp or chickpeas.

Fuck that.

I travel a lot.

And, as a novice car buff, I am constantly gawking at cars that are strictly unavailable in the USA, but operate just fine without seeking our approval.

I could never afford a new Alfa, Lada or Tata, but I covet them just the same. My idea of a “new” car is my 2004 Toyota.

* Buses that advertise internet never, ever, have internet.
* Hotel rooms are never more than 10 meters away from a crowing Rooster.
* Tourists get hangovers. Travelers get hangovers and diarrhea.
* Your phone charging cable will invariably disappear or fail during the trip. (continued)

My wife absolutely loves Christmas.
I lean more towards the grouch side.

We have a decorated tree in the living room. There are Xmas knickknacks on every surface. Lights are strung up outside.

No friends or relatives are coming over anytime soon.

No one will see any of it.
She’s happy though!

In Cusco, I was walking by lots of street vendors. One was an elderly man sitting on the sidewalk, selling only wooden matches. He was asking S/150 (42¢) for six boxes. That’s nothing. I bought two packets of six. He thanked me. Then I slipped him an extra S/5 coin. Should have been a lot more.

In 1998 I went back to Turkey and became a passenger on a Hop-on, Hop-off bus called “Fez Bus” that hits all the main tourist spots.

This month I am climbing aboard “Peru Hop” bus in Cusco. I will, no doubt, be the oldest person aboard.

I’m short on time and this looks like fun.

I collect die-cast toys of Volkswagens. Specifically, I have collect old, used, played-with, die-cast VW buses ideally made in Europe.

I bid on a Mini Lindy VW bus in an auction, and, to my surprise, I won it. I already had one in my collection. Now I have two.
