West End: It’s where all the good food is, but the tourism lists won’t go. It’s where the schools are criminally overcrowded, but ACPS couldn’t possibly inconvenience wealthier whiter public schools to make things fair. It’s also not just one neighborhood.
Our PTAs have been trying to do this for a long time but it’s an ongoing effort to just help people know what is the school board, what is redistricting as a concept, etc.

Also you asked for 3 but here’s a fourth. The school board is a foreign or distant concept to many community members. Go to buildings, soccer fields (and not just ASA, the pick up games), and cultural meeting points to talk about who the school board is and what they do and how families can engage.

Also, thank you for asking. People make a lot of assumptions about what would help without asking so appreciate asking the question.

3. Host some Board town halls/meetings on the west end at times other than weeknight evenings. Schedule some special board meetings/open hearings at different times and places. It’s virtually impossible for most of us to make it to Braddock at 6 p.m. on a weeknight.

2. Actually translate materials and comms into key languages and checked by a member of that linguistic community. Parentsquare and Board updates often don’t make sense to people.

1. Go to the community. West end rec centers are lifelines for the community and a good place to host a pop up or AMA. Do it at times people will already be there - rec after care pick up, school events, etc.

It should be a wake up call to this school board that they are not getting these questions from confused working class families on the west end. Other overworked, exhausted, and personally affected west end parents are getting these questions. Why? Because we show up for us and know you won't.

Despite the admirable grassroots efforts of West End parents- who are also working multiple jobs and trying to feed our families- to bridge the gap that the school board and ACPS left, so many parents are still blindsided and left utterly confused about what is happening.

100% It is time for people to rise up and demand that the school board do it’s dang job or step aside and let new board members come on who will hold ACPS accountable for its performance and fiscal management.

My vote for school board to whoever puts a stop to this. I hope the community turns up to every meeting to raise hell about this in public comments. It’s not just this terrible issue that is a bad look for the community, but it sure seems to be part of a much bigger problem.

As a taxpayer and parent, I’m angry that our community is struggling. Our families are barely making ends meet, and we continue to see poor leadership and waste from ACPS central office leadership that is unresponsive and unaccountable to the kids and parents and teachers and staff.

Will the School Board finally take its role of holding the superintendent accountable? Or will it continue to let the interests of its constituents be steamrolled by ACPS leadership? If the school board won’t take its job seriously when it comes to oversight and accountability, they need to go.

Where is this letter? West end parents would like a word.

Can we get an itemized statement up in here? We got a lot that needs funding and yet it seems like it’s always something that doesn’t help the kids or the teachers that they’re spending on.

School board might want to do something here. Kids are losing out on critical time reinforcing learning at home because their Title I school is left with no way to print? In a city with a median income of over 100k?
