Isn't picking a server the whole point of Mastodon's federated nature rather recommending everyone to the main instance?
There was a time Mastodon closed off registrations to promote this.
As much as Mastodon is an 'alternative' I don't see any traction with people who don't care about tech on it.

yeah almost a decade mastodon has launched and still no traction compared to bsky (even had an invite system) and still surpassed mastodon in active users.
