Esta región pertenece a Oklahoma porque Texas la abandonó al entrar en Estados Unidos debido a que se encuentra por encima de los 36º30' de latitud, límite a partir del cual no podía existir la esclavitud. Texas prefirió perder todo ese territorio antes que prohibir la esclavitud en el estado.
