25 years ago, I interviewed Issam in Gaza for my book, "Occupied Voices: Stories of Everyday Life from the Second Intifada." This week - after months of forced displacement, starvation, and living under bombardment - he returned to his destroyed home. He sent this photo.

In a passage in "We Crossed a Bridge," Abdel-Halim, a Free Syrian Army member, describes rebels' final evacuation from the Homs Old City after years of brutal siege. I hope this is one of many things in my books that will be proven wrong. You will see Homs again, Abdel-Halim. She's not gone, at all.

The withdrawal from Qusayr is of strategic importance. To convey some of its human significance, here is an excerpt from "The Home I Worked To Make." A man from Qusayr describes bombing and siege, as well as a horrific evacuation in which bombs rained down on civilians even as they escaped on foot.
