Institutions really matter!
If there were no 2º round in Chile, Jara (a communist) would win. Since there is a 2º round, the one with the best chances is whoever comes in second from the right.

The POPGOV project argues that while modern representative government – which is characterised by regular elections and independent representatives – has become the main alternative to authoritarianism, it often serves to empower a narrow group of elites above others.

👩‍🔬The ERC Synergy Grant is one of the most important European scientific funding schemes.

The Nobel Prize in Economics very often goes to scholars talking about inclusive institutions and equality... but they belong to a very exclusive elite of US-based academics. This is a systemic problem. The system is washing its conscience.

➡️ In Europe and the US, equality emerged from inclusive institutions.
➡️ Rising inequality did not drive prosperity or innovation.

I've lived in Europe for + 20 years. It’s either extremely difficult to get political rights (Switzerland), or theoretically easy but practically blocked by administrative obstacles (Spain).

Today I exercised my voting right for the Argentine elections, voting from Barcelona. Mixed feelings.

We often get Citizens’ Assemblies backwards. Don't fit a problem to an institution. Instead:
☑️Define the problem.
☑️Assess strengths & weaknesses.
☑️Choose the right participatory tool.

Align resources with the problem, not the other way around.

🇧🇴 End of an era in #Bolivia.
The MAS leaves power after 20 years.
Democratization from below, concentration from above.
Times of change ahead — what role will citizen participation play now?

Napoleon I, Napoleon III, and Hitler ruined direct democracy’s reputation. Their plebiscites became the perfect excuse for elites to block citizen power and defend a “restricted” republic against accountability and participation.

Dina Boluarte, the (former) president of Peru, was removed through an express impeachment process for "permanent moral incapacity." Another impeachment carried out behind closed doors without any citizen legitimacy. Would it be better to incorporate recall?

Many bestselling books on contemporary politics thrive because they offer a seductive plot: a few digital masterminds manipulate algorithms to reshape democracy.
Conspiracy makes for a good story—but it’s misleading and doesn't help us grasp differences across cases and inspire meaningful action.
