Been a busy month thus far, working away on another chapter and the usual marking but also secured two job interviews for the end of the month (outwith academia) and been working on a really exciting postdoc fellowship application. It’s on the diaspora and got some big Scots-Dutch elements, so 🤞

An excellent Saturday spent in Auld Reekie at the Scottish History Society’s AGM. The Presidential lecture touching on John Galt’s brilliant Ringan Gilhaize, Viscount Dundee and Killiecrankie. Taken just before retiring to Sandy Bell’s pub, a guid evening.

Off to New York today, almost there, for the holidays. Looking forward to seeing my partner and her family. Pictured earlier was the mandatory Vitamin T.

With a significant effort and some excellent feedback, I have finished revising a chapter on the Highland War for a forthcoming volume on the Jacobites. So, it only felt appropriate to crack one of these tonight.

James Mackay became Lieutenant-Colonel of his brother’s regiment of the Scots-Dutch Brigade. He was killed fighting as part of that regiment (the 1st) against the Jacobites during the Highland War at the Battle of Killiecrankie, 27th July 1689.

His younger brother James enlisted directly in the military of Francesco Morosini, Doge of Venice. Probably around the same time or just after the end of the siege. He seems to have served well before joining his brother in the Dutch Republic in 1678.

At the end of the Siege, Mackay returned to France and to his regiment. He served in the first half of the Franco-Dutch War against the Dutch. By 1674, he transfers his commission as a captain to the Scots-Dutch Brigade. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-General.

Mackay and his fellow officers were dispatched as part of a 1669 French expedition under the command of François de Vendôme, duc de Beaufort. Mackay would later write an account of the siege in French - modelled on Julius Caesar’s Conquest of Gaul.

Hugh Mackay (the eldest of the two) went first in 1660. He joined the Scots Regiment de Douglas in France but he first saw action as part of a group of French volunteers serving Venice during the latter half of the Cretan War (1645-1669).

Another lesser known link is through the Mackays of Scourie and, namely, two brothers - Hugh and James.
The third and fourth male siblings of the family went the way of many unlikely to gain land or title (due to primogeniture), they sought military employment in Europe.

A link to my first chapter on The Scots-Dutch Moment(?): The Scots-Dutch Brigade and the Highland War, 1689-1691. Might be of interest to some new followers, stay tuned there’s more coming which I’m currently toiling away on!

Braw day yesterday at the Women’s Letters in Early Modern Scotland workshop in Stirling at Cowane’s Hospital. Thanks to Jade Scott and Laura Doak for organising, a fantastic plethora of speakers. And thanks for indulging my rants about my corpus of Jacobite women’s letters!

It’s my birthday today and I finally got this as a gift! Cannae beat a bit of Saltoun’s eloquence on national militias as opposed to standing armies.

I think one of these is an appropriate post paper pint.

Proud to report that I’ve just been elected as an Associate Fellow of the Royal History Society - a few days late because I was on holiday but chuffed to be part of the society.

Today’s the day, I finally got my author’s copy of the edited collection I recently appeared in. This is my first academic publication and one that’s really special. Appearing alongside peers and braw scholars, well chuffed.

It’s in good nick as well with a good binding, minimal foxing and some uncut pages. Here’s a lovely photo of the Bannatyne Club’s watermark and another of it taking pride of place on the shelf next to Dalton.

Proud to have finally got my hands on the Bannatyne Club’s print version of Hugh Mackay’s Memoirs, this has been a major work for me throughout my academic life and I am currently working to bring forth my own, albeit shorter, article on the memoir.

Working on a draft for my next deadline and prepping for some contract work on the side. March is looking busy but no bad at ‘a!

Captured this wee snapshot of a sadly neglected braw 20th c. building in the city centre of Glasgow.

Classic domed tower on the corner.

This month’s ‘non-work’ book. And it is stellar, a real masterclass in punchy direct writing. Essential history to fully understand the US and how it came to be.

The red coat became associated with the Stuart dynasty’s forces from mid 17th century. It was a symbol of legitimacy for both Jacobites and their opponents during the 1690s. Some Scots Jacobite officers likely wore it in 1689, having served in the disbanded 1688 armies.
