This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important
⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

So much if our current problems are tied up in a weird cult that continually thinks that all our long term crises are pointless bc human existence is going to get wrapped up within the next five years so why bother.
Got sucked into the side of TikTok commenting on the trend in American evangelicalism right now—where there’s a growing belief that that the rapture will happen this Tuesday—September 23rd

This is due to a of set of things happening in Israel interpreted through a tangled "Left Behind" theology+

Anyone who perceives Kirk as “civil” or as “doing politics the right way” is betraying their comfort with the ablative world Kirk worked so hard to create, secure in their belief that the grinding wheel will never touch *their* skin.

One wonders where that belief arises from.

It is quite simply dishonest to describe TPUSA as a “free speech” organization and not even mention the “Professor Watchlist,” as NPR just did. Reporting on a crime does not entail adopting the victim’s views.

Wapo article does a good job covering two realities: How deeply watching a parents‘ immigration arrest affects kids, and how DC residents are organizing “walking buses” and neighborhood lookouts to help kids with immigrant parents get safely to school. wapo.st/3VNYZ08
They watched ICE detain their dad. Now D.C. neighbors escort them to school.
Immigrant neighborhoods across the District have organized “walking school buses” to shuttle kids to classes during President Donald Trump’s federalization of D.C. police.

The state’s elimination of vaccine mandates is a courageous first step toward decluttering itself of any excess kids.

it isn’t about who deserves what, or who is entitled to what, or what’s fair and what isn’t, these are the outcomes of decisions that have already been made and cannot be reversed in time to avoid the consequences, even if people were willing to vote the shooters out.

one of the great conservative moves over the past decade has been to make themselves so unpleasant that their own family members are forced to cut them off, and then use that fact to argue that *liberals* are too uncivil

Y'know, we could all just drive into Chicago; traffic jams pretty regularly, as I recall, and it's not like ICE is going anywhere with vehicles.

Chicagoans likely know their public transit options well enough to still get around... and it won't help Trump's MAGA dorks, they're TERRIFIED of it.

My theory is that dealing with structural racism is hard but yelling at people about phrasing is easy. It ends up being low-hanging fruit for people who want to look and feel anti racist who don't otherwise have any tools or strategies.

Porn usage in this way is a response to some other trauma or compulsion that was created before the porn usage. Porn may have become a troubling thing, but it didn't start the trouble, and handling porn addiction in this way requires tackling the actual source of the problem.

“we should be rigid in our values, but flexible in how those values show up as policies” is the best way I’ve ever heard this expressed

for all the people who are like “a Mamdani would never fly in Kansas” - right because the policy needs would be different there. the values can be the same!

What fascinates me is that healthy is relative to your other options. Eating hot dogs is vastly healthier than starving to death. What did they pick as the base 0 default diet? They had to pick a baseline that people can go up and down from. And how accessible and realistic was that baseline?
remember that fad a few years back for "objective" film and game criticism, which involved assigning numerical values to various aspects of a work, doing some math with those subjective numbers, then calling the derived result "science-based"? yeah me either that would be fucking stupid

Let's talk about weird art.

Weird art, gross art, sexual art, violent art, all has its place and belongs. And you really need to stop acting like the existence of uncomfortable themes equals harm. That kind of censorship, which IS what that is, only serves to silence and abuse people.
