This has not happened. We find that only 9 percent of Al-Gabha's founding authority had former ties to Mustaqbal Watan.

By my count, over half of the members of Mustaqbal Watan's Central Secretariat had ties to the former NDP (as of 2024). The founding authority of Al-Gabha had less than 10 percent representation for individuals tied to the NDP.

As we make sense of the new(ish) political landscape the ongoing legislative election is laying out in Egypt, it's crucial to remember that Mustaqbal Watan remains a home to a lot of networks that were tied to the Mubarak regime (either by formal or familial ties).

As legislative elections are proceeding in Egypt, a few observations on the distribution of seats among parties in the state-sponsored list (the only list contesting the party list races) when compared to the 2020 election distribution:

The continued silence on Sudan and what is happening in El Fasher is appalling.

My colleagues at @jadaliyya.bsky.social just organized an incredibly enlightening and eye-opening discussion on Israel’s strikes against Iran and the exchange of hostilities that ensued shortly after. 🧵

The story of the past decade is the story of Sisi slowly coming to terms with the limitations of his assumptions and convoluted worldview.

He's been learning on the job and the results have been disastrous for the country and its people (6/6)
January 3, 2024 at 9:49 PM
The result is a precarious autocracy heavily reliant on coercion and external support, unequipped to manage competing economic priorities, strongly committed to personalism, and resistant to the mediation of formal institutions (5/6)

(2) The assumption that repression alone can keep a lid on the social costs of his economic policies and the ensuing popular discontent;

(3) A wager that "Egypt is too big to fail" & that outside bailouts will (sooner or later) save the day & fund his coveted megaprojects (4/6)
January 3, 2024 at 9:48 PM
(1) An interest in avoiding Mubarak's missteps (as Sisi understands them). This is partly evident in Sisi's (fluctuating) reluctance to engage in political party building or cultivate a politically loyal business class (3/6)

Check out my conversation with former Georgetown MAAS classmate Arif Rafiq (don't ask which class). We spoke about the evolution of Sisi's management of the political field, the context for the 2023 election, how the Sisi regime differs from previous ones, and more...

Egypt's presidential race: not a competition for votes but a competition over key roles inside Sisi's political apparatus in the coming years.

The election was the Sisi regime's "employee performance appraisal." The star "performers": Mustaqbal Watan and the RPP's Hazem Omar

I’m relieved to hear that this racist man was arrested. I hope he will be held accountable for his actions.

A lot of people are still waiting for reactions from Obama administration leaders hoping they would speak out against the distributing views expressed by Stuart Seldowitz.

For many of these people, the peace of autocrats (along with all the repressive and exclusionary bargains it supports) is not fait accompli (14/14)
October 20, 2023 at 5:09 PM
...you see a real popular challenge to the regional order that the club of autocrats, Israel, and other actors have been trying to cement through the Abraham Accords, Saudi-Israeli peace, etc. (13/14)
October 20, 2023 at 5:09 PM
It's important to remember that mobilization in support of the Second Palestinian Intifada and the anti-Iraq War movement were central in creating the space (physical and intellectual) in which the Jan 25 Revolution later emerged. (7/14)
October 20, 2023 at 5:08 PM
Many managed to make their way to Tahrir Square, where opposition political figures were also present (5/14)
October 20, 2023 at 5:08 PM
Instead, they framed their pro-Palestinian mobilization around the slogans and symbols of the Jan 25 Revolution, chanting "bread, freedom, and social justice", "we're not leaving", and "we're the youth of Jan 25th and we won't abandon you, Palestine." (4/14)
October 20, 2023 at 5:07 PM
What stands out is the regime's evident miscalculation that the Friday rallies could be controlled and geared toward pro-Sisi expressions. Many people who mobilized today have clearly ignored the cringe invitation to "stand by Sisi, if you love Palestine." (3/14)
