I’m sorry but saying social media is an important medium “now” is WILD! It would’ve made sense if McCain said this in 2008, but 2025?!?
REPORTER: What lesson did you learn after losing the Democratic primary for Mayor of New York City?

ANDREW CUOMO: I did not do enough on social media.

ZOHRAN MAMDANI: He lost because he didn’t talk about affordability for New Yorkers.

I hope it's clear to everyone now that Trump really is going for it - he's trying to become a dictator. I don't know if he'll succeed, but he's working to install himself as an autocrat unaccountable to voters. And he's weaponizing the military against Americans who oppose him as part of that effort

He just thinks he’s smarter than y’all.

So…let me see if I have this right. The federal government is gonna shut down in 30hrs, and the party that controls the ENTIRE federal government is trying to blame the party that controls NONE of the federal government for the looming shutdown?

This is, after all, the original and authentic meaning of "stay woke." In fact, the perversion of "woke" into an epithet is perhaps the defining metaphor of our moment: Historical victims are not only being revictimized, but also mocked for never forgetting this is always a possibility in the US.

It is actually peak absurdity that we still have people arguing that voters should bend to the positions of their political representatives instead of the other way around.

The other telling thing is when Coates brings up the history of Black Americans. Klein responds, "Trump won more of the black vote in 2024," as if that is some kind of sweeping rebuttal. 1. This history still matters 2. 84% of a very large group backing one party is still a very high number!
"Democracy dies if prominent black writers don't frame their arguments around appeasing white voters in Wisconsin," or "Democracy dies unless liberal writers praise radical, hateful conservative activists" is the subtext. And it's worth thinking through who makes these kinds of arguments and why.
We are edging close to an argument that all left public figures need to think like political strategists first, constantly measuring the impact of their work on the Democratic Party's electoral prospects. We saw that frame used against racial justice protesters in 2020-22; Gaza protesters in 2024.

Everyone, as Coates acknowledges, thinks that politicians need to win more voters. Obama and Harris can't sound like Coates. Coates agrees! But Klein argues that political culture (so the writing of people like Coates) shapes politicians and hints Coates should be mindful of that.
