Want to know the real world effects of the Trump Administration's grant freeze? Here's an article I wrote about it. It is not hyperbole.

How the Trump Administrations Efforts on Cancelling Federal Grants are Killing Our Nonprofit
In the aftermath of two disasters we mobilized to help rebuild homes and lives in some of the poorest areas in the US. All that work is in danger of ending and people will suffer as a result.

Fell twice in the past week and am concussed with broken bones in my left arm and hand. A bad week but certainly not my worst. Wrote about it here

We worked for 2 years to find a solution after we didn’t get a disaster declaration and the state of Alabama did little to help. We aren’t people who go after federal grants. We are a group of working class folks trying to figure out how to get resources to isolated places. This stops that.
President Trump’s order that all federal climate spending be paused is paralyzing agencies, delaying construction projects and forcing some companies to furlough workers.
Trump’s Halt on Climate Spending Freezes Jobs and Stalls Projects
The pause affects billions of dollars and is delaying home repairs, factory construction and other projects, many in states that voted Republican.

Reading this, I’m reminded that, in the lead-up to the 1996 Olympics, Atlanta police pre-printed thousands of arrest citations with "homeless" and "African-American"—officers only had to fill in a name.

Ryan is one of the best human beings I know. I hope the folks back home make the right choice here.

Hi Bluesky friends: I wanted to share that my book, THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US, is coming out in March. Based on a half-decade of reporting, it examines the rise of America's "working homeless," following five Atlanta families desperate to secure housing in a gentrifying, increasingly unequal city.

Let this sink in: there’s not a single state, city, or county in America where someone with a disability who receives SSI can afford a one-bedroom apartment.

SSI payments are capped at $943 a month nationwide.

The average monthly rent is $1,399—or an astounding *148%* of an SSI recipient’s income.
About 7.4 mil Americans benefit from Supplemental Security Income (SSI), but 50% of SSI recipients live below the poverty line.

A stark reminder that the failure to keep pace with the cost of living is a policy choice. @socio-steve.bsky.social rooseveltinstitute.org/blog/50-year...
