A long term project to engage the community and sensitively conserve the previously neglected Victorian Wardsend Cemetery, on the banks of the River Don.
Wardsend was the cemetery for St. Philip's Church from the 21st June 1857. St Philip's used to stand at the junction of Infirmary Rd and Penistone Rd near the Globe Works. The church and the Globe Works (bottom right in the second photo) can be seen in this 1939 aerial photo from Britain from Above.

As usual I went up to lay a wreath on the CWGC 'Sheffield (St. Philip) Wardsend Church Cemetery' screen wall at City Road Cemetery. I've emailed the CWGC Regional Manager to suggest that it could do with a bit of a clean. We will continue to request that official commemoration return to Wardsend

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Remembrance Service. Special thanks to the Y9 students from Parkwood Academy who worked with Meghan Tipping (Rooted in Talk) and staff from the school to develop and lead the service. They were a credit to the school and to themselves.

It's about time we had quiet or silent fireworks don't you think? The poor wildlife like our fox friends have to run the gauntlet every night for about a week. I'm sure they must get accustomed to an extent but it doesn't stop them getting spooked by them.

I forgot to take a team photo at our volunteer session so here's a last minute half-team photo! Thanks everyone
Tasks included continuing to clear the front bank, removing ivy from memorials and litter picking.
We were very lucky with the weather. Wardsend always looks lovely in the Autumn sunshine.

In 2020, forty years after the CWGC memorials were removed, in a joint project with Wates Living Space, Victoria Cross Trust and the Royal British Legion, the Friends of Wardsend Cemetery found and marked the 16 graves with wooden crosses inspired by the temporary markers widely used in WW1.

Autumn colour at Wardsend this morning. The River Don, the entrance to the cemetery taken from the bridge and a view from the top of the main path near the old Sheffield to Manchester railway line.

A reminder that it's our annual Fungi Walk tomorrow.
As usual it's being led by Ziggy of Sorby Fungus Group. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable but he's also a fun guy to be with.

I guess we'll never know who this handsome chap is but this photograph was taken by W.T. Furniss Jnr.
who joined his father in his photography business.
Tragically he was killed in 1917 fighting with the KOYLI and is remembered at the CWGC Tyne Cot Cemetery.
W.T. Furniss Snr. is buried at Wardsend.

In a Sheffield garden. This young fox looked a bit unsure as to what to do when it encountered one of the neighbourhood cats. It made itself look bigger and stared intently, while the cat stayed put, played it cool and stared back. It was the young fox that blinked first.

Ghost at Wardsend? 👻

This reply suggests that TW's sighting of a ghost was a case of mistaken identity.

It would also appear that the most frightening element of the report was very possibly T. W. 's style of writing.
