Saying what’s on my mind online since 1996
Big day for me! I’m directing/leading an 8 person crew for a filming shoot. It’s kinda bonkers but totally ready for it!

Today has been an awesome day at school. We spent time in the studio control center where we learned to run live broadcast. I had a try at both mixing audio and controlling the camera feeds. Super basic but oh so cool.

First day of … 17th grade?

Or in other words, my first day of Film school!!

I emotions on my sleeve, this is another manifestation of that. I love deeply, and embracing my connection with Aotearoa makes this a deeply personal moko that was always meant for me. A friend referred to to as armour. I see it as a Cloak of Aroha: +3 protection against loneliness and isolation

The moko then goes up the neck to behind the ears. Connecting the heart with the head. The aroha meeting up with the knowledge and connection I have. Functionally they point to my glasses, creating a cool effect.

I know this will be something that change how people view me and I’m ok with that

The moko continues to the shoulders, back and neck. This is where the collar connects to the back, creating a bit of a cloak, (I’d say korowai, but that has special connotations for some folks). Here the aroha surrounds me. Again a reminder and celebration.

The “collar” is Tristan’s signature style. you see whetū (stars) that symbolise those connected to me. They represent those I connected with the most, like the stars in the sky that I love so deeply. It’s also tied closely to the Matariki myth.

I generally dislike “memorial” tattoos. But I wanted a way to show and celebrate those I have loved (and loved me in return).

The moko begins at the sternum (the heart) and is spreads up through the chest. The shapes and swirls are classic, but for me they symbolise how the aroha (love) permeates

Tēnā kotou katoa (Hey everyone)

Over the last week I sat down with the amazing Tristan (@manawa_tapu on IG)
To receive this amazing ta moko (tattoo). I’ve planned this for for some time now and want to share the thinking and meaning behind the piece. So, as always, jump down the rabbit hole.

Will share more soon

Night 3 of 4 of my G3 ATLAS photo campaign. The weather turned out stunning at Piha and was able to get a wide angle shot of the comet with landscape.

I also got my first “great” close up shot. As G3 made its way through a few clouds and the horizon. Tonight will be the most intense yet.

While Taranaki was not in the Lord of the Rings movies. I found these photos really invoke the movies.

When the light is lit, I see the beacons of Gondor. When it’s off, I see Isengard and the Eye of Sauron and Mount Doom.

I hope you enjoy.

ps - the big ball of light is the moon rising.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to scramble down to Taranaki and snap some photos of Comet G3 Atlas. Here are some of my favorite shots.

Hello Taranaki, ready for the great evening. (Don’t let me down!)

I get to New Plymouth, check into the hotel only to find that my reservation is the wrong day and they are fully booked…

FML

Looks like I may be some sleeping in the car tonight. 😢. Let’s hope the weather holds out.

Went out to Piha last night to catch the Sunset and get the lay of the land for Comet G3 Atlas. The comet (predictably) was too close to the sun to see, but it was nice to get out and enjoy a truly wonder evening. Here is a couple of the photos.
January 16, 2025 at 12:05 AM
Doing some testing tonight for the comet. Weather is goi g to be very hit/miss so I wanted to get every opportunity possible.

After moving to the Southern Hemisphere 14 years ago, the heavens have taken on a new look for me. In short, everything is upside down and skewed. 1/16
