Anyway talking about this with Madison prompted her to ask me what might be a good fantasy introduction book so I dug through the bookshelf and pulled this out. Was contemplating Terry Pratchett and couldn't find my copy of His Majesty's Dragon lol

I was able to handle it 25 years ago when I was a teenager. But I'm hesitant now with attention spans. It's the same reason I wouldn't tell a kid interested (today) in drama films to start with Paths of Glory, Casablanca, or Citizen Kane. I think easing into it would help. But I could be wrong. We have a 4 month old, so I guess I'll find out in 12 years 😂

Man this shit is infuriating like what do you mean don't recommend the most widely known fantasy book in existence to introduce someone to the genre because the writing is too complex

But for people who are unaware of the difference between hard and soft magic systems to then suddenly be thrown into a hard magic system with a lot of rules, however clear they are, I think is a mistake. In fact, I'd say avoid any books where a hard magic system is a central component. Malazan Book of the fallen: I don't need to say much about this one, the discourse is everywhere. This would be like deciding to teach your 4 year old to swim in the diving pool while they're blindfolded and handcuffed. It's not gonna go well for anyone. The Lord of the rings: I can hear you rolling your eyes. Knock it off. I love LotR just as much as you do. But, I don't think the modern casual reader is ready for the writing style. Sentences were long/complex in that time (sometimes an entire paragraph), with more robust usage of grammar/punctuation that we don't see anymore. Not to mention the intense/rich lore and world building which is still unrivaled. I know it's hard, but resist the urge to recommend it
