There was a great NYT piece on how the American economy isn't really conducive to religiousity because of the need to work, work, work. As inequality has gotten greater so too has the feeling that you're falling behind and have to catch up. So you work, work, work.

With all due respect, perception is reality. That "fake" movement got people elected. Eric Cantor was ousted and that reverberated through the GOP. With how the media covers the left I'd settle for fooling them despite how real and legitimate our policy positions are.
