I dare you to go to Annunciation School and tell our grieving community, in effect, guns don’t kill kids, antidepressants do.
Just shut up. Stop peddling bullshit. You should be fired.
This is a great read. And it's a great doc. Coming of age in the 70s, he and Petty were my guys. Piano Man is a Steinbeck novel of a song and just because it's mega-popular doesn't mean it isn't mega-brilliant. And "I don't want clever conversation, I never want to work that hard" is a killer line.
NPR critic Linda Holmes has been a Billy Joel fan since the '80s. HBO's new two-part documentary still taught her something new about his life — and provided a chance to consider the role of his music in her own.

I adore Ozzy for the same reasons as everyone but also because he challenged Cat Stevens to a train off, Peace vs. Crazy. This is one of my favorite pop-culture moments of the 2000s. So good. Hat tip for Colbert and Stewart for settling the dispute with Love Train. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW-6...

The maestro has passed - the man was a open heart with two legs - with an ear that heard the angels. Quite literally. Love and Mercy for you and yours tonight . RIP Brian.

Everyone will correctly bring up Pet Sounds but holy hell do I also love Sunflower, in particular this gorgeous Brian Wilson composition on it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe6y...

"Easily one of the greatest matches of all time. Anyone who doesn't think so is just living in their own nostalgia." One thousand percent. I don't know that I've seen sustained shotmaking like that. Ever. I'm still trying to absorb it. What a jewel it was. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBnN...

I of course grieve George Wendt for Norm, one of the all-time characters, but let's not sleep on how big of a fan of the Replacements and Soul Asylum he was. He talked constantly about his love of both bands. He even brought up the 'Mats when he guested on the 1988 sitcom Day By Day. I took note.

In a day filled with catastrophic news, maybe a Will Forte essay about his friendship with Val Kilmer isn't crucial to read. Then again, maybe it's more crucial than ever. www.vulture.com/article/will...

val kilmer’s turn in TOP SECRET is one of the single best comedy performances ever committed to film, both in terms of comic precision and mechanical virtuosity. just watch this whole clip in its entirety; it’s stunning

"It was easy to forget about Kilmer, then see him in something and spend the immediate aftermath questioning why he wasn’t in absolutely everything." Well put. He always held the possibility of brilliance. When he found it, like in Tombstone, it was radiant. www.the-independent.com/arts-enterta...

Val Kilmer was spectacular in a lot of dramatic roles, namely in Tombstone and the Doors, but man, I also loved his early silly films, like Real Genius and Top Secret. He was effortlessly funny. I watched those films a million times when I was young. I never got off the Val Kilmer train.

This is a fantastic interview with a staggering piece of news about when Rafa knew he was lighting the torch at the Olympics. He said he learned he was taking the torch from Zidane and lighting it "five minutes before." Roddick's stunned reaction was my own. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SvP...

Hardly anyone talks about Hackman's delicate and stricken performance in "I Never Sang For My Father." You wouldn't think of him as a natural fit in the role but of course he did it superbly. Ebert called it "one the most unforgettably human films I can remember" and it was nearly all Hackman.

There are two trios of actor-friends that I love thinking about in their salad days. Nic Cage/Crispin Glover/Jim Carrey banging around LA looking for a break. That's a lot of mania. And Gene Hackman/Dustin Hoffman/Robert Duvall living together and auditioning together in NY, broke and brilliant.

I've always felt that Gene Hackman was a low-key comedic genius, although his legend is more about his gruff characters. But think of his work in Tenenbaums and Get Shorty and Young Frankenstein and Superman. Hilarious stuff. Hilarious. He's certainly in my top five pantheon. Magnificent.

I'm 55 and I've been watching tennis my whole life and I can't remember an analyst choking up the way Mary Jo Fernandez did watching Madison Keys win her first slam. Nerves are always what undid Keys. Not today. Bold strokes. Clarity. Conviction. I teared up, too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITIW...
