It’s true that medieval people were very ignorant compared to us today. For instance, they would panic over mysterious apparitions in the sky, or believe that a strongman leader was blessed by God.

This text includes a bold theory on folk music: "How many songs are not just musicians trying and failing to remember something they have heard anyway? /.../something that happens when you go diddely-doodely up and down a bagpipe /... / some QWERTY and a little bit of ASDFGH on a bagpipe."
The liner notes to "Music for the Children of Gothenburg" tells the story of our early years, from the first meeting in a jail exercise yard. It also talks about originality, composition, tradition and how the limitations of instruments influence these.

In the Middle Ages the westernmost part of Europe was Arabic - yet we call it "The Orient". Arabs were in Iberia for 800 years - yet we call it an "occupation". We call their decline a "Reconquista" - yet the preceding rulers were Visigoth and had only been Catholic for 100 years.

If you want to get an idea of how old Damascus is: when its river basin was first settled the city I'm currently in (Stockholm) was still buried under glaciers from the ice age.

Black musicians, composers, music scholars predated the Renaissance and, not surprisingly, existed outside of the Western world. Let’s stop pretending composition, musicology, and music theory only existed in Europe.

Early Black Musicians, Composers, and Music Scholars (505-1505 CE)
While musing about how exclusion of Blacks is built into music academia as a colonial driven knowledge system, I (as usual) posted those thoughts to a twitter thread It was obviously not my first. …

"In modern times the shawms and loud trumpets generally banish the sober fiddles from the feasts, and the young girls dance eagerly to the loud noise, like hinds, shaking their buttocks womanishly and rudely."

it's true, drake and kendrick are indeed engaging in a troubadour-like homosocial exchange of wits. in 800 years scholars will theorize that they were in love.

THEY DOXXED EA-NĀṢIR
Ea-nāṣir lived in n. 1 Old Street (this is a modern name completely fabricated by Sir Leonard Wooley, the excavator at the time) of area AH. This home was finely built and stood with an area of 110 m2, an average home in this neighborhood being about 70 m2.

Early Music is always a question of interpretation. We in Vox Vulgaris have chosen this medieval proverb to guide us:

“The interpretation that makes you ardent and hopeful and active and reverent is the true one.”

A haunting piece about reconstructed prehistoric homes that have been abandoned and are themselves now becoming archaeology: 'Fragments of material culture ... are slowly becoming archaeology within the interior: this time we can witness the end of a prehistory.'

In Bosch's Hell the shawm acts as a visual "bridge" between the different scales - next to the humans it looks like a bass shawm, next to the oversized instruments it looks like a soprano shawm. It is the only thing in the painting that always is to scale.

When botanist Richard Deakin examined Rome’s Colosseum in the 1850s, he found 420 species of plant growing in the ruins: cypresses and ilex, pea plants and more than 50 types of grasses.

But some flowers growing there mystified him. They were so rare they were found nowhere else in Europe.

The new drama series "The Pirate Bay" from Swedish SVT has the actor portraying Vox Vulgaris member Rasmus holding a concert flute. This is appalling slander: Rasmus has never even touched a concert flute. Possibly a baroque traverse flute once in his youth but he never exhaled.
