In 2002 (latest comprehensive BJS data that I could find, made in 2006), agencies with 100+ officers received ~27,000 use-of-force complaints with only 8% sustained (leading to discipline).

About 1 million people experience police threat or use of force yearly, with 15% resulting in injury. 98.2% of officers involved in killings are not charged. Since 2005, only 155 officers prosecuted for murder/manslaughter, with ~1/3 convicted (often lesser charges). Only 16 were charged in 2020.

Black people are killed at 2.5–3 times the rate of white people (e.g., 30.4 per million Black residents in St. Louis from 2013–2023). Native Americans and Hispanics also face higher rates. An estimated 250,000 civilians are injured by police annually.

Police kill approximately 1,000–1,200 people per year. From 2015–2024, its estimated over 10,000 civilians were killed by police. 64% of 2024 killings occurred during traffic stops mental health crises, or non-violent offenses/no reported crime.
