I'm only used to non-technical books on kindle, but 55 BRL sounds reasonable. FWIW "The Name of the Wind" is 53 BRL and "Wise Man's Fear" is 33 BRL.

A silly but sometimes effective way to gauge "real" exchange rates is comparing prices in big food chains. A BigMac meal is ~31 BRL here.

I think it is likely something related to the CS curriculum. Even though I learned calculus early in my undergrad, it was rarely used in courses, even in theory (most of them with a more combinatorial flavor)
