What fascinates me about the moment we are in:
There is a group of guys who were inspired by 9/11. So they joined al Qaeda, went fighting in Syria, and did all the al Qaeda things (which are kind of gory). They got control of a territory, and they needed to run it.

With Syria, we are now at a stage where there is lack of reliable news, but accounts still try to capitalize on the interest to the topic. So they start posting rumors and outright bogus claims that fit their audience bias. Time to start filtering news better.

If you’re wondering why the rebels are moving south (you’re not, but I’m going to tell you anyway): that’s where the people are. There isn’t much to the east until the Euphrates, beyond that are the Kurds. To the west are Alawite areas, where the population is less supportive, if supportive at all.

Unfortunately, no immediate benefits for Ukraine from the situation in Syria. Yeah, Russian decision-makers have to spend some cycles on Syria instead of Ukraine, that's largely immaterial. I don't think Putin will divert any resources, either.
