Margaret Hamilton had to wear an extensive amount of green paint for her role. When they were doing smoke effects during the scene where the Wicked Witch melts, they messed up and accidentally forgot to extinguish the fire under her causing the smoke effect

The makeup for the Scarecrow was so thick, it would take them hours to peel it off after filming. He was permanently left with marks on his face from the mask.

Buddy Ebsen played the Tin Man, and this required for silver makeup to be slathered on his face. Despite them rubbing cold cream on his skin as a base, this didn’t do much. He had such a bad reaction to the metallic makeup that it caused lung failure, resulting in a trip to the hospital.
