Happy Black History Month.

This is a reminder that the hard-fought battles which formed LGBTQIA+ community we know today were led and shouldered by members of black communites.

Here's a few pieces from the archives related to queer black culture from the 1960s-1980s.

Just finished this gem.

"Curse of the Queerwolf" is a 1988 "Gaysploytation" film about a man who gets bitten by a crossdresser and finds himself becoming gay every night after.

It's fairly selfaware but also just filled with transphobic and homophobic humor so hard TW.

The will of people to ignore historical evidence of queer identity is strong.

Case in point, this wonderlly dressed young gentleman circa the the late 1800s who's name is denoted as "Margaret"... something tells me there might be more to the story.

The impact of the "Male Gaze" on Lesbian Aesthetic is quite fascinating.

This new piece highlights this intersection well.

As a Queer Historian and Archivest, I can sometimes find myself feeling alone in my discipline (which many consider new).Yet, somehow history always finds a way to remind me, I am not the first and I will not be the last to study this.

Allow me to introduce you to Marcus Aurelius Antoninus better known as "The wife of Hierocles" or Elagabalus. Emperor (Empress*) of Rome.

Based on the contemporary accounts of historians (including Cassius Diao, the Historia Augusta and Herodian)

Elagabalus was very (very) likely Transgender.

Hey, I appologies for the random shout out, I was wondering though if you may be able to help with a project I am working on. I am an archivist and historian who focuses on education around queer history and i am looking to find photos of an item in your collections.

A few images from Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld's "Sexual History of War" from 1930 produced by Institute for Sexology, Berlin.

Published 3 years before the Institute was sacked and burned by Nazis.

Maude Adams Famous Male Impersonator (Drag King) of the 1900s.
The piece below is from her 1900 production of L’aicon (“The Little Egg”)in which she plays the titular character of Napoleon.

She was openly lesbian with 2 longterm interests Lillie Florence (1891–1901) and Louise Boynton (1905–1951).

I just wanted to bring some attention to Hibari-kun from 1981s "Stop Hibari-kun".

🏳️‍⚧️ SHE IS AN ICON 🏳️‍⚧️

At a time when trans identity was often played for a laugh, this character remained true to herself without falling to tropes.

As an archivist and historian focused on queer history and more specifically the works of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld.

I am growing increasingly concerned about the similarity between early Nazi propaganda and the rhetoric of modern "conservatives".

This is one of my favorite finds.

In 1921 after 25 years of Boston marrage Kathrine Coman, the wife of Kathrine Lee Bates (Author of America The Beautiful) passed on.

To cope with her grief, Bates wrote an entire book of poetry to her late wife.

This is a signed 1st edition of said book.

Ever wonder what the 1st gay kiss on film was?

Here it is.
from Cecil B. Demille's 1922 "Manslaughter" we have a playbill.

This lovely young couple can be seen kissing passionately during a flashback scene to the Roman empire.
