Wildfires on the eastern Greek island of Chios emitted thick smoke that blew southwestward on 23 Jun, observed by @noaa.gov VIIRS aerosol optical depth (AOD >0.5). Also evident is a small plume from a wildfire near Papadianika in southern Greece. @mparrington.bsky.social @pierremarkuse.bsky.social

Very pleased to have contributed to the work of @matthiasforkel.bsky.social to constrain fire carbon emissions over the Amazone and Cerrado. The burning of woody debris is a key uncertainty, for which we provide constraints using (a.o.) TROPOMI observations 🔥🛰️

These numbers are mind-boggling.

Day and night averaged downward shortwave (=sunlight) radiation over summer increased by over 20 W/m²!

Net downward radiation increased by 15 W/m²!

Most of this is attributed to reductions in aerosols:

The 2024 Antarctic #ozonehole has persisted throughout November following its average development up to that point. The stratospheric polar vortex is predicted to breakdown in early December bringing it to a close.
