Beautiful performance today of my woodwind quintet Pillars in the Sea, inspired by a dismantled dock beyond the Verrazano Narrows on Staten Island—a place of reflection and peace that often returns to me in dreams. Grateful to Christiana Winds for their sensitive and expressive interpretation.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Susan Alcorn. What an incredible musician and kind soul. I last played with her in 2019 when she was kind enough to come and talk with my students. They all ended up getting a chance to improvise with her on a show in West Philly led by Dan Blacksberg.

In 1887, African American composer Edmond Dédé was living in exile in France and completed the greatest work of his life:

an opera 545 pages long telling a story of epic proportions. He knew that what he had accomplished was important.

Almost 125 years after Edmond Dédé’s death, his magnum opus “Morgiane,” perhaps the oldest existing opera by a Black American, is to be staged for the first time.

Incredibly beautiful realization of my work “Binary Orbital Mechanics” performed here by percussionist Andy Thierauf. The score describes the relationship between two bodies in gravitational attraction, which serves as instructions for how the two might interact musically.

Been on location practicing with SPLICE Ensemble for the upcoming concert at SPLICE Festival in Kalamazoo! Going to be a great event with some amazing performances.

Here’s a cool one from SPLICE Fest a few years back by Robert Seaback called “Mutation (as the mark that noise leaves upon presence)”

Practicing Entanglements: The Cave, The Tape, The Spark

Since 2019, Paula Matthusen, Jennifer Beattie, and SPLICE Ensemble have explored Kentucky’s Mammoth Caves, creating a piece that is moving, humorous, and poignant, ending with a tribute to the great Alvin Lucier and an electrified pickle. ⚡️

“Brood X Dreams of a Pool Party” from the compilation album “Tymbal”

Musicians were given a sample palette with which to make their own original recording—4 hours of Brood X field recordings. The results span the soft hills of ambient drone to the skittering abstractions of modern computer music.

“This is not Aquarius” by DM Hotep (guitarist for the Sun Ra Arkestra), commissioned by BEEP, reflects on the broken 1960s promise of peace and understanding. Featuring Tara Middleton (vocals), DM Hotep (electric guitar), and a vast orchestra of electronic musicians, it explores shattered idealism.
