Why, yes, my talk tomorrow (on AI and education) does include a reference to Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

That nightmare relationship has been partly formed by $ + ed tech. I keep thinking about this (esp. after hearing from my daughter's kindergarten teachers about why they are obligated to use Chromebooks in class). I was also thinking about this (from @nplusonemag.com)

Putting my PhD in Hispanic literature to good use :)
Also-- I am kind of fascinated by Margaux Blanchard and plan to expand these reflections at some point.

I feel so official! Also: new cards to reflect that @mlnjournal.bsky.social will be introducing a new issue (Jewish Languages and Literatures) + we will be officially adding Lusophone literature (we already publish some articles in Portuguese, but we are expanding that).

I'd love to know how this company (ProRata) "measures the value" of the content (from which it profits)
The argument is that it's ethical because publishers get a cut, but this company is still profiting from content they did not produce.

Flight to Toronto booked! I'll be chairing this roundtable on journal publishing with editors from Critical Inquiry, Modern Language Studies, and Hispanófila.

This morning on Substack, I wrote about content creators (a term I despise) and writing as a product:

I am chairing a roundtable at the MLA on journal publishing-- and one thing we will discuss is the shortage of peer reviewers.
Here is my attempt to find 2 external readers for one article.

How I'm currently managing the week of no camp and no school (for my daugther) when I have to work.
Thank god for flexible, remote work + my public library.

Best wishes for the start of the semester to all of you who teach and/or study.
Also: Amtrak's quiet car is the best.

Working from my local library. They have a native seed library for gardeners, an art room for kids, quiet mtg rooms (where I am now)-- and they're advertising a talk I am giving. Last time I was here they were helping out the unhoused population by giving them space and wifi to apply for jobs etc.

I wanted to do a deep dive on copyright law and our evolving understanding of what constitutes plagiarism-- I didn't have time for that today, but here's a start: victorialivingstone.substack.com/p/will-ai-ch...

A friend once told me that "scars are evidence of having lived." This scar (where my thyroid-- and malignant tumors-- was removed) has turned out to be minimal. Just over a year cancer free.

Sick today with some rotten virus and my 5 y.o. decided to make me a card to help me feel better. Single parenthood is hard, but then sometimes it's not.

I agree-- and there is research to back this up. I have written about active rest (a state you cannot achieve while on a cell phone) in at least two of my essays-- here's one: literarymama.com/articles/dep...

Also in my latest post (which is a reflection on translation and the limits of AI): a discussion of a (likely) new edition of this book I translated years ago.
