This is it, their point of no return. Theo doesn’t like the idea of having a partner, but he thinks he can manage it if it’s Lucy. She’s less a partner and more an employee: she needs him more than he needs her. It makes him feel better about agreeing to this.  Theo’s feet barely touch the deck when he feels blunt metal connect with his jaw.

He narrows his eyes. “This won’t be the worst of it. Best case: nothing goes wrong and we get our prize with no conflict. But I need you to know that’s not realistic, princess. You’ll probably suffer much worse than a bullet through your wing before this is done. Is this prize worth it to you?”  She scoffs. Shakes her head. Then she nods. “It’s worth it.”

She dips low enough to hear music from street performers, louder chatter, and the rumble of steam engines in automobiles. She smells wood smoke from the chimneys of restaurants, salt from the sea, and clear fresh air. As she flies, Lucy passes a dozen other flying Fae and Hikaine. Many of them smile at her as they fly by, unaware that she’s the princess who is going to be their ruin.
