Poof, somehow attuned to the shift in mood, lets out a soft peep. The sound is so gentle and oddly well-timed, it draws a faint, surprised chuckle from Fenn. "Guess even the furball gets it," he smiles. "Poof is wise in ways we can only begin to understand," Kael agrees. Poof lifts her chin proudly, as if she's just delivered a moving speech of her own. "Star*Relic?" Kael then turns to me, an expectant look softening his pale, iridescent features. "Respectfully, may I place a humble request before you?" My brows lift. "Oh, uh...? Sure." He straightens. "Althea, Tyros, and I have dedicated our lives to the words of the ancestors, waiting for this moment. This purpose. While my companions have formerly expressed interest in remaining in our underwater home, I made a vow in my youth: if I were ever granted the honor of meeting the Star*Relic and entrusting her with our salvation, I would offer her not only our sacred Pearl, but also myself. I don't remember everything that happened to me while in the portal's grasp. What stuck most weren't the sights or sounds. It was the sensation of it, a nauseating prolonging that stretched me thin and warped me sideways, as if something were probing my limits to see just how far I could be twisted before something finally snapped. Instead of being instantaneous, time seemed to dilate. Everything stretched and warped while the universe took me apart piece by piece, studying each fragment with a strange, morbid curiosity. Then, it shoved me back together in some haphazard, disorganized way, deciding, "Yeah, sure, close enough." Teleporting through the Ebonycliffs gateway wasn't travel in the ordinary sense. It was disassembly. Obliteration sprinkled with indecision and an excess of creative liberties. I was pulled in every direction at once and unraveled molecule by molecule before finally being flayed and rewoven by forces that couldn't care less if I survived the trip. Every nerve burned as though I were trapped within a funeral pyre. Every breath felt borrowed. At some indeterminate point between existence and oblivion, after limbo got bored of playing tug-of-war with my insides, I hit the ground hard. Air punched from my lungs in a single, ragged gasp. For a few heartbeats, I was convinced I was still dying. And then came the disappointing revelation: I wasn't. I just wished I were. That was the level of misery broken gateway travel offered. Would not recommend.

I wouldn't call myself a great musician. More like dingy-dive-bar-at-midnight material at best. But I know enough to get by. My mother used to teach me every single evening, guiding my fumbling fingers with the kind of patience she didn't often have the luxury to spare. I paid close attention, not just because I wanted to learn, but also because it was one of the few activities reserved for women, thus a rare opportunity to spend precious, uninterrupted time with my mother. It was perhaps one of the only things that belonged to us. Something hers and something mine. My mother used to say I had the voice of a goddess. Rare. Unique. "Special," she'd call it. The silver lining to the tracheomalacia I was born with. A soft, narrow windpipe. It meant breathing issues as a kid, and it still gives me grief with every cold or respiratory bug, making them hit harder than they should. Not exactly a divine gift. But mostly these days, it just means my voice is rough. Raspy. Smoky. Distinct. Too distinct, if you ask my father. Or brothers. It's "too unpolished" for royalty. Too masculine for a female. Too me. But my mother liked my voice. She heard something beautiful in it. more. And because of that...I appreciate it all the

"Thanks," Ryn sighs, stretching her arms overhead with a dramatic groan. "I just want a foot massage, some strips of jerky, and twelve hours of sleep. Is that so much to ask?" "I'll second the jerky," Drax says, visibly perking up at the mere mention of meat. "Lucky for you," Ryn replies, "I've got a decent amount left." She begins rummaging through her bag with the determination of a woman on a mission. Out comes her battered leather journal (which she treats more lovingly than most people), a steel water bottle, various survival supplies, a blow-up pillow, and enough provisions to qualify as a miniature general store. The only thing still attached is her bedroll. Drax exhales the slow, beleaguered sigh of someone witnessing their own personal apocalypse. I eyeball him, already knowing where this is going and bracing myself. "Excuse me while I reorganize the catastrophe you just unleashed," he grumbles, crouching beside her bag as though he's about to defuse a bomb. Drax is, without question, the most pathologically orderly person I know. He can't abide a mess. Watching Ryn empty her bag on the ground is, for him, a spiritual attack. Woe to anyone outside our little gang foolish enough to disrupt his carefully-curated order. I'd almost pity the poor soul if I weren't too busy marveling at the spectacle of righteous fury he'd unleash. Naturally, Ryn ignores him completely. He starts folding things that don't want to be folded and tucking away rations with the reverence of a librarian handling sacred texts. Meanwhile, having located it, Ryn tears into a pouch of dried meats with zero ceremony. The smell hits Drax, and he freezes, fist curled around one of Ryn's wrinkly shirts (one I instantly recognize, being that it's among Ryn's favorites, marked by that angled zipper slicing down to its asymmetrical hem). "Relax, big guy,” she says, tossing him a strip, and I conceal a chuckle, since the action feels reminiscent of a zookeeper feeding an animal. He drops the shirt, catches the jerky, and tears off a chunk with his carnassials. All the while, he watches her with sharp and unreadable eyes. I let them be, turning my attention to the surrounding cliffs. I can see why my father picked this spot. The tall sandstone walls on either side act like a natural windbreak, which is crucial now that the desert gusts are gaining speed, angling toward full-blown haboob territory. Ha. Boob. Still funny. What? I'm allowed one childish indulgence. Okay, fine. One among many. Take it up with my middle finger.

I was forged to outlast, to survive, to claw my way up, and to wrest something from the ruins left by men like our clueless conqueror. We may have lost our home, but we haven't lost the battle. Not by a long shot. We'll gather the pieces, sharpen our teeth, and return. I clench my fists, welcoming the cold wind's sharp wake-up slap. It's better to focus on the anger. The path down isn't so much a trail as it is a series of unfortunate rock formations that demand scrambling, careful balancing, and praying the rocks don't give out beneath our boots. Every few steps, there's another leap of faith. Literally. We do our best to not plummet between the crevices or slip down a shale chute. All the while, the ocean waits below, white-capped and furious, ready to swallow anyone who miscalculates. Once we get past an especially sinister section, Ash turns to me for the next route, and I take the lead, guided by the glowing dot in my mind blinking like a waypoint anchored to the portal's location. The gateway's near, but the cliffs are particularly merciless for those of us without wings. Every time the wind shrieks off the coast, I swear Fenn faceplants again. Fortunately, Dolith is right there with a steadying hand and the world's most patient expression. "I'm fine,” he insists. "Totally under control. Just testing the ground's stability. It failed."

The storms on Sylvanis are merciless. They roll in and out without a pattern I can discern, but the longer I'm here, the more it feels like they've decided now's the time to let loose. Rain isn't weather anymore. It's my new lifestyle and personal nightmare. Every time I step out of the pop-up tent Maytra gifted me, the downpours soak me clean through, clinging like an overbearing parent. Annoying. Smothering. But at least consistent. What isn't consistent are the mutations. Some storms unleash torrents of sparks that singe clothes and bite into skin in a very angry, murder hornets sort of way. Others tear open the sky with lightning that webs across the canopy in raw, jagged veins. And once (thankfully just once), the jungle itself screamed with a storm of pure magickal wind. It was a miles-long crimson funnel that spun through everything in its path, raging with something-to-prove energy. I watched it hurl trees and stones as if they were toys while it nearly swept me and Poof into oblivion. I had to ignite Star* Relic Mode just to stay alive and cling onto the boulders we were taking shelter around. Without it, we'd have been scattered across the jungle and likely shredded into tragic confetti in the storm's wake.

I spin in frantic circles, eyes darting through the undergrowth while my brain scrambles for answers. Did I drop it? Did it slip off during that magickal storm? My imagination helpfully supplies the worst-case scenario: the ring sinking into swampy sludge, swallowed whole while every past owner (Goldspire, her entire lineage, and probably the Primordials themselves) collectively facepalm, even from the afterlife. They kept it safe through interplanetary wars, the collapse of their own civilization, AION's tyranny, and the founding of a magick Academy...only for me to lose it practically on day one. And in a jungle this size? Where storms casually remodel the landscape in a manner similar to a child knocking over sandcastles for fun? Yeah. Perfect. Totally retrievable. Bravo, Veyla. Absolutely stellar work. What's next? Misplacing Poof? Dropping an AI core down a ravine? Losing the stash of leftover birthday sweets I smuggled into my bag and am desperately trying not to solely live off of? (Please, not that.) So... To the Primordials and every single one of Goldspire's very responsible ancestors: my sincerest apologies. Really. Hope you can find it in your cosmic hearts to forgive me. I'll just be over here, inwardly cringing uncontrollably for the next...eternity.

A shadow appears. It's not a manta ray this time or a whale. It's something far larger. The sunlight overhead becomes eclipsed as something massive drifts into view. A fin appears, longer than a boat, cutting through the water with lazy, terrifying strokes, trailing streaks of glowing plankton in its wake. And then, the body appears. It keeps coming. And coming. And coming. A serpent the size of a city block coils around the dome, its ridged scales catching the interior light in flashes of silver and slate. Spines jut along its back, each lighting up in neon green like diseased bioluminescent organisms. The water bends around it, currents warping from the sheer force of its movement. I suck in a sharp breath when its head finally swings into view. It's the size of a house. A big house. Rows of teeth jut in mismatched saw-blades, jagged as shipwrecks, framing a maw I'd very much like to avoid testing the acoustics of. Its cavernous eyes swivel, slitted pupils narrowing on the sphere in my hands. The Al core. Of course. Dinner with a side of divine tech.

Sure, I could live off Forge rations forever. But by day three, I'm already more than done with chewing through bland nutrient bricks and freeze-dried mystery mush for every single meal. (Poof, of course, thinks she's won the culinary lottery, since she gets my share). Foraging, unfortunately, wasn't one of the handy skills pre-downloaded into my clone brain, so identifying poisonous fruits and fungi is not exactly in my repertoire. Still, I've spotted some primate-ish locals chomping on this particular cluster of high-canopy fruit more than once, so I figure it's about as safe as jungle dining gets. Famous last words, right?

You know what I miss? Old #MessageBoards / #forums from the early 2000’s. Those were soooo amazing. 🤩 I just cannot keep up with instant messenger chats like Discord. There’s waaay too much constant discussion. Forums were more my jam. ✨ Man, those were the days! 💬

"We're with them," I say smoothly to the door attendant, nodding at a group that just passed through. "We're their plus ones." The lie slides off my tongue too easily, sweetened with that well-honed confidence no amount of rehearsal can fake. My smile is polished and controlled. Even Drax manages to pass for distinguished, which is an achievement worth a medal. Ryn bats her lashes with lethal results, her charm soft as velvet and twice as dangerous. The doorman folds instantly, stepping aside without question. Too easy. The ballroom opens up beyond the threshold, revealing itself to be less a room and more a spectacle. Floating lights drift above the grand archway, shifting hues in gentle gradients that are reminiscent of a sunset. I've heard students call this place the Celestium Grand Hall, which is normally reserved for the most prestigious ceremonies, symposiums, and showcases. But tonight, it's dressed to the nines in sheer magickal decadence.

Eleven days later, and I'm bracing against the bite of the wind as we slip through the opened gates of Skyspire Academy for the graduation ceremony. The cold is getting worse. It nips at any exposed skin, sinking its teeth in deeper with every minute spent outdoors. Only when we pass beneath the arched threshold of the grand auditorium and the interior heat envelops us do I shrug off my jacket. The space is even more breathtaking than I remember from Zara's campus tour, complete with vaulted ceilings, clusters of crystal lights dazzling overhead, and lavender and gold banners that shimmer and billow with soft enchantment, trying their best to conjure some semblance of celebration. Not that anyone is in a big celebratory mood. Not with everything else happening lately. The city is still reeling from the attacks, soulcrafts are vanishing, and the people in charge are scrambling to patch together an illusion of normalcy. The graduation ceremony, normally a grand affair, full of pageantry and pomp and scheduled near the winter solstice, has not only been moved up, but it's also compressed and stripped of everything except the ceremony itself. Instead of the traditional week of festivities and banquets leading up to the event, Skyspire's final-year students are crossing the stage a month too early. It's not a joyous send-off. It's a necessity. There's little elation to be found on the graduate's faces that I've seen milling about so far, leading me to believe it'll simply be a quiet, somber march across a stage, given that the world outside is falling apart, and pretending otherwise feels almost dishonest or flippant.
