if you ever want to know what it looks like when I pack for a trip ...
Is it ambitious to take this many library books to family Thanksgiving? I am halfway through writing my new book, and I need these books to stare at me and ask if I am working.

Every now and then I remember that sponges are ANIMALS — that these seeming hybrids of plant and rock; these sessile, porous, tissue-and-organ-less barrels, tubes, and blobs are just as much an animal as a falcon, wolf, or shark — and marvel once more at the wonderful weirdness of life on Earth.

some friends & I were asked to leave the Bad Ass Cafe in Dublin, Ireland, because we were laughing too loud. We weren't even drunk, but the Bad Ass couldn't handle us.
no joke I get kicked out of a bar off St. Mark’s bc I was a little drunk and started two-stepping with my friend and the owner got mad because he didn’t have “a cabaret license” and threw our whole party out
Yall ever been kicked out of a bar or club? Like are you banned from anywhere. 😂

8-hour drive home from a writing retreat = 8 more hours of creative work.

The mountains, the silence, the movement—sometimes the best writing happens when you're not actually writing.

Find those in-between moments. They matter.

work was so stressful today I'm drinkin' scotch & eating extra hot peppers (fresh from my sister's garden) raw. My tongue's on fire, but it's worth it for the endorphin rush.

my version of this would be an editor saying reindeers are "too regional"
Johnny Marks: And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows

Creative Writing Workshopper: *I* would never say that to a mutant reindeer, actually

this is why poor poets on small presses don't win those big book awards. they all require crazy big fees plus multiple review copies that neither the poet nor the press can afford. When a poet wins one of the big prizes, all it says to me is they had enough money to submit.
$150 sub fee and 20 review copies to judges for a post publication prize submission is…a lot for a small/micro press. Bordering on hysterical.

(In this economy.)

Many presses are making their reading periods accessible by doing away with mandatory fees.

Prizes likewise need to consider their financial accessibility. Presses are not the same weights—Graywolf and River River shouldn’t pay the same entry fee for a title.

It makes no sense.

raccoons are having a great fall. There was one take a twirling shower/bath in a ditch while it rained near my house. It looked so happy, made me day.
we just watched a raccoon laying on its back, playing with a stick and teething on it. It suddenly bounced up with the zoomies and twirled around with the stick a few times and ran off!

Earlier this year I approached AGNI about doing something for the X-Ray's 130th Birthday; I didn't know then my writing would take such a turn!

I asked 3 brilliant writers to join me— Diana Cao, Diego Báez & Mike Brockley— in celebrating this feat of invention.

All Her Fault is riveting. I've loved Sarah Snook since 2015' The Beautiful Lie, in which she played a modernized version of Anna Karenina. So glad Succession finally put her in the spotlight.
