Roonea these days I really need to finish that pisstake on a Lichtenstein comic-panel-copy where the dialogue is "ROY LICHTENSTEIN can't letter for SHIT", in my very best display lettering. I did some practicing and got letters I like, I just gotta finish the actual image and put the letters over it

It does! Also kinda boring but in a complicated way. Also it'd be a nice excuse to do a final pass on all the dialogue...

here's the first four drawings of like 11 in the band-car transition, shot on twos, with the camera slightly panning on ones, look at those arms disconnecting and stretching!

hardcore mode: print it all out, fresh piece of white paper over it on a lightbox, break out the Ames lettering guide to rule guidelines and let the letters flow and bounce however they want to.
If you wanna make a new font for the book then that might be a good way to figure out what it'd be, too.

Ha! Yeah that sounds pretty much on-brand for him. So much of the Zippy strip sounded more and more like one of Andy Rooney's rants at the end of "60 Minutes" about how much better things were when he was a kid.

I did not know everyone is mad at Griffith now but the last time I read any Zippy it was so curmudgeonly that I am not at all surprised that a lot of people are mad at him!

I feel like a lot MORE great strips of the early days had great BGs. Especially in the Sunday strips. More room.
That said though I certainly agree that great art isn't the whole of a comic, XKCD is a shining example of how great writing alone can carry a comic much further than great art alone.

Walt Kelly did a lot more BG than his gags required, because he clearly just loved drawing the heck out of a swamp tree.

Damn that's hanging on super long for a purple. Normally anything bluish tends to be pretty fugitive.

The only possible objection I could have to this would be if it induced you to start driving too fast, there's a hell of a lot of music to drive to fast on in Naganuma's catalog.
