Highly recommend the audiobook of this semi-autobiographical work by Barbara Comyns. Tonally, it reminded me of Orwell’s English-set novels of the 30s but personally bolder and engagingly odder.

Tangerines, soft-ground etching on paper (1983). It’s not only the wonderful technique but also the formal placement of Avigdor Arikha’s still-life pictures that lift them beyond the ordinary.
Two radiantly fresh tangerines with their stalks and long leaves still attached are held in the top right of the delicately drawn plate, their ghostly shadows tying them to a fixed space.
