With Elon Musk presenting $1m cheques to voters in the US, it's good to see new controls promised here to keep foreign donors out of UK politics.
That still leaves much to do to end our political parties' dependence on large donations from their wealthiest friends.
💷 We need to get big money out of our politics.

The government's plans to reform rules on corporate donations are a step forward but sadly, they don't go far enough.

Don't hurt the old, poor, sick, disabled.

Partners in accountancy/law firms treated as self-employed, pay Class 4 NIC.

Employer NIC avoided.

Rules save partners £138,000 for every £1m of profit shared.

Big four law firms dodge £4bn NIC a year, billions more elsewhere.

We can't afford the rich.

This arbitrariness is an integral part of a police state's method.

The law is not meant to distinguish what's legal from what's not and to shape behavior accordingly. It's simply a laundry list of options for the state to justify its repression ex post facto.
Amid all the very frightening aspects of Mahmoud Khalil's detention, the fact that they detained him first and came up with the justification after the fact is not getting the attention it deserves.

It proves that he was targeted for his speech, but it is also the hallmark of a police state.

He draws on his professional experience in anti-bribery and financial crime compliance to expose the back doors for illicit money in politics.
