Also was informed by a semi-reliable source that the ones on display are copies. I'm ambivalent about this.
The Louvre thieves should have tried the British Crown Jewels instead of the French ones. Not only are the British ones prettier and bigger, but they're guarded by tired old men with fake, blunt swords and silly costumes. Probably take them a month to realise they're missing.
