Maybe this is why I didn’t like the book tbh, the women who are written in a way that I feel like I understand their interior lives are the ones being portrayed as “lol, women amirite?” - Katerina Ivanova and her landlady, Raskolnikov’s mother. Their scenes broadcast their inner thoughts very loudly

Also, Sofya seems like more of a fairytale heroine than a real person. Instead of a personality she has “quietly endures suffering” and “instantly loves Raskolnikov for some reason”

I almost wonder if when people talk about it being some Great Novel they’re thinking more about the premise (is there a type of guy who’s just so smart and cool that he can do whatever he wants without consequences) and not what’s actually on the page?

Is it possible that being mad at everything all the time has just made him depressed?

This one, if you haven’t seen it. Also, that bit about “put your hand on your pregnant belly and hum, you used to love that” is a nice little narrative flourish for a story but probably completely made up!! I doubt the 3 minute original video included anything like that!! bsky.app/profile/cpax...
