Lake glass is the reward you get for patience and perseverance on the Great Lakes.
In an outstretched palm, there are dozens of pieces of lake glass. Green, blue, brown, and white, it sparkles in the sun. It looks like candy, or maybe what would happen if flower petals were given glass souls. I told one of the other Formula One fans in my house that it can't possibly be the Hungaroring this weekend because there has already been a race there this year.

Today, I got a response.

In my May 12th email, I basically begged Sen. Smith to take a stand on impeachment. Speak up about it. The House looks to the Senate for leadership on important issues. Senators can and do take stands on issues like this.

This is her response, received today (May 29):
Thank you for contacting me about tariffs. I appreciate hearing from you about this important issue. I believe that our country stands to benefit greatly from international trade. Today, Minnesota farmers and businesses export manufactured goods and agricultural products worth tens of billions of dollars, but we must ensure fair practices by our international partners and a level playing field for American workers and businesses. President Trump has proclaimed major new tariffs on nearly all imports, including from our closest neighbors and allies like Canada. This is disastrous for the economy and is the single largest tax hike on families since the 1960s. This broad trade war with no clear strategy, waged on a whim over social media, is doing real harm to Minnesota businesses, farmers, and workers. I have heard from farmers and small businesses in Minnesota who have no certainty about what comes next and are concerned about the impact of tariffs on their bottom line and on their ability to plan for the coming years. I will continue to stand up for Minnesotans and make your voice heard on the President’s trade actions. Thank you again for contacting me, and please do not hesitate to reach out in the future. I sent @smith.senate.gov an email to follow up on her off-topic form letter response on May 12th. That was 17 days ago.

I thought it was a pretty good email. Clear and direct; impassioned, even!

I saved a copy for myself.
Senator Smith, I reached out to you on April 25th regarding impeachment. That was the day that Senator Ossoff signaled strong support for impeachment, which is a brave thing for him to do, given that he's up for re-election. You are retiring. Can you also please publicly support the impeachment of this tyrannical, corrupt, cruel man? Trump is destroying our democracy with every day that he is in office. In response to my contact with your office on April 25th, I received a form letter about the fourth amendment and the right to privacy. It is possible that your office does not even have a form letter ready to send to constituents who are terrified about losing our democracy? Representatives often look to the Senate for leadership on issues. I am contacting you to be one of those Senators who shows leadership in the time of the worst Constitutional crisis our country has ever faced. The House wants to be assured that if they support impeachment, the Senate will back them up. You swore an oath to defend the Constitution against ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic. Please, please, please. Speak up about impeachment. Your constituents are BEGGING you to lead on this issue. Thank you for your time and attention to this extremely important matter.

I have been contacting my Senators (in addition to my Representative) and asking them to support impeachment.

The House often looks to the Senate to be leaders on issues.

So I contacted Senator @smith.senate.gov about supporting impeachment. This is the reply I just got:
Thank you for contacting me about the Fourth Amendment and privacy rights. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue. The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects individuals from unreasonable search or seizure of their "persons, houses, papers, and effects." It also establishes that when the government wants to conduct a search or seizure, it must first provide "probable cause" and obtain a detailed warrant. The Fourth Amendment is a vital part of our civil rights, but the rise of the internet has fundamentally changed the way that this privacy protection functions in our society. Unfortunately, our laws have not always kept pace with rapidly changing technology, jeopardizing our privacy online. Your privacy is important. Your data is important. And your ability to control both of those things is important. I am working in Congress to strengthen privacy protections, especially online, so that Americans have control over their own data. I will continue working in Washington to ensure that your data is safe and protected from unwanted intrusion. Thank you for contacting me about this issue.
