Buttons frowns, worried. "Auntie?" Throwing back the rest of her drink and setting the mug on the capstan, Auntie squares her shoulders. "Right. Enough business. Would you dance with me?" For a moment, Buttons doesn't know how to respond. Yes, he wants to say. But his honest nature forces him to humbly admit, "I've never danced with another." Auntie sizes him up and seems to find him agreeable enough. "First time for everything," she says. His heart flutters in his chest, and as the band plays a joyous melody, he takes her hand and lets her lead.

Zheng waits for him to leave before leaning over to Auntie. "He'll return to you. Shorty." "I will throw you overboard," Auntie replies calmly.

Happy two year anniversary to me immediately sitting down to write a canon compliant post-series fic, idk how this was fully formed in my head that quickly but there you go. Started writing 10/26/2023, started posting 12/30/2023

It was Izzy who held his attention the longest, after Ed; moving as fast and as gracefully as a dancer, with flourishes in his movements that seemed more necessary than showy. Stede had only the briefest moment to watch him before he was engaged in his own battle. At first, luck prevailed, as his rival was as immature a swordsman as he was. He held his own, moving the man into a difficult corner with a few tricks he'd learned from Ed and a few more he'd witnessed from Izzy. Stede’s luck ran out when he stumbled over a thick loop of rope on the fog-hidden deck. Falling backwards onto his back, he saw the man advance on him, his sword swinging down in an arc through the air. In the split second before death was upon him, Stede saw the silver of another blade clash upwards against his enemy's, a swirling movement and a flash of black linen and leather. Izzy. Stede pushed himself to his feet, watching Izzy move with the sure-footedness of a determined and cold-blooded killer, watching his blade cut through air and skin and artery. Fights like these left no walls between the mind and the rest of the world; emotional armor was useless and rendered transparent by the pure need to survive. His rival felled, Izzy turned briefly and breathlessly to Stede: on his face, framed by long hair that had fallen well out of place, was blood, gunpowder, and, stopping Stede's own breath and heart for a sweet, dangerous second, love. He returned to the thick of the fight, smoke and fog leaving no trace of the man as Stede remained, dumbfounded, his own sword hanging uselessly from his fingers.

Jim looks down at their hands pressed together and bites their lip. "I couldn't think about it," they eventually say. "Where you were, or what happened." "I'm glad you found Archie," Olu says. "That you weren't alone." Jim looks up at him, gazes long and deep into his eyes. "I'm glad you found Zheng." Olu wraps his arm around Jim's shoulder and pulls them closer. "You ever want to talk about the rest of it?" "Not really," they say. "But...I probably should, right?" With a surprised bark of laughter, Olu nods. "At some point, probably." He can't see Jim's smile, but he can feel it as they lean their face against his arm. "Fair enough," Jim says. They're quiet for a moment longer. "Do you ever want to talk about the rest of it?" The question startles him, even as he realizes he should have expected it. "I don't—" Need to, he's about to say. But he thinks about the rolling hills behind them, the sense of peace he has when he considers the small homes dotting the land, the way they pull him more than the sea ever had. "I probably should, too," he admits. "At some point," Jim says. "Not today though." "Today we watch the waves, and maybe get some lunch. Breakfast? Lunchfast," Olu says. He looks down the beach and watches Tiff sit with Zheng. "Could grab her and Archie, make it a group thing." "Archie's back on the ship, I think," Jim says. He opens his mouth to speak, but stops when he sees the slight pink of Jim's cheeks. With a sly smile, he asks, "You seen her already?" "Just for a little," Jim hedges. Olu scans them quickly, looking for any sign of Archie's presence—a hickey, maybe, or something out of place in Jim's clothes. It takes him a moment to realize they've got a new necklace of sorts; a silver chain with links only about as thick as his little finger, short enough that it sits fairly close around Jim's neck, connected on both ends to a plain O that rests flat between their collar bones. He turns them in his arms and hooks a finger into the ring. Grinning, he asks, "This her doing?" The pink in Jim's cheeks has turned into a full-on blush. "Said she found it in town." Olu drags them in for a kiss. "I like it."

Going off topic a bit with this post. This one is a favorite of mine. The light through that one wave is wild.
The painting "Near Crimean Coast" by Ivan Aivazovsky. There is a yellow sky with the sun impressed on the left side of the painting. The blue sea takes up the lower half. Sunlight filters through a small wave, giving it a glowing essence & lighter color than the rest of the sea. A tall ship sails on the horizon.
