Political theorist and activist. I'm a pragmatic radical who believes that supporting steps in the right direction is better than demanding huge leaps all at once. I mostly write about cooperatives and employee ownership. Also: dog and cat person.
Something that seems to have gotten lost is that just days before the attack on Iran, Netanyahu's government was in danger of collapsing.

The war isn't about Iran's nuclear program, it's about saving his job and avoiding trial for corruption.

Employers revealed more job cuts in February than they had in any month since July 2020, according to a report released Thursday, with much of the reduction concentrated in efforts led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Another of Musk's SpaceX Starships "experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly" and crashed. What a perfect metaphor for the federal government.

Typical response of a CBP agent to the "What did you do last week?" email:
1. Went to assigned location. Sat in truck.
2. Went to assigned location. Sat in truck.
3. Went to assigned location. Sat in truck.
4. Went to assigned location. Sat in truck.

“An unelected billionaire is now bulldozing the research arm of the Department of Education,” Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said. “Cutting off these investments after the contract has already been inked is the definition of wasteful.”

Disturbed by the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico? Keep calling it the Gulf of Mexico. The dolphins and turtles and fish and other sea life don't care. What they care about is the expansion of oil drilling and damage to their ecosystem being unleashed.

Don't get distracted.

As Rebecca Solnit writes, autocrats are autocratic because they are weak. Don't forget that.

A question to ask any federal employee, esp. ICE or Border Patrol: "If POTUS gives you an order and a court rules it unconstitutional, and the President says to ignore the ruling, what do you do?" If they say, "Obey POTUS," remind them that they swear an oath to the Constitution, not the President.

"When the richest man in the world can so easily undermine our place on the global stage, it is, quite simply, a harbinger of decline: a sign of a corrupted superpower so brittle that its sources of influence can be taken apart from within."

The Trump administration's move to cap indirect cost allocations for grants to universities should be no surprise. Intellectuals are one of the first targets of any tyrant. Also, I'm sure the goal is to undermine higher education and to privatize research, especially biomedical research.

We may be slightly comforted by the fact that, thus far, Trump seems more interested in rewarding people who were loyal to him than actual governing. And we know that there is an inverse relationship between loyalty to Trump and competence.
