Water companies have borrowed over £10 billion in 'green' bonds since 2017. This year they were responsible for a third of all UK corporate bonds issued.

Ranchers revealed widespread "cattle laundering" - moving cows from illegal deforested land through "clean" farms to dodge JBS's monitoring. 🔄

“Everyone does this. People pass their cattle from one farm to another, and when they get to the meat-packing plant, everything is ‘legalised’,” said one.

JBS has previously set – and missed – targets for monitoring its full Amazon supply chain.

In the meantime, its footprint in the rainforest has grown massively, and beef continues to play a major role in runaway Amazon deforestation.

Shell bought at least five 70,000-tonne cargoes of gas from the Russian Arctic that were escorted through frozen Siberian waters by sanctioned icebreakers, Unearthed has found unearthed.greenpeace.org/2025/02/09/s...

We identified almost 120 further shipments of Russian LNG during last year’s ice season that were bought by European clients, including TotalEnergies and Naturgy, and delivered from Siberia to ports in Belgium, France, Spain and the Netherlands.
February 10, 2025 at 9:28 AM
There is no suggestion that Shell or any other European companies buying LNG via this route made direct payments to Atomflot, which would be a clear sanctions breach.

But the investigation reveals the vital role Atomflot’s icebreakers have played in ensuring Russian LNG reaches western terminals.

This is the Vladimir Voronin (red arrow), an ice-class tanker transporting gas bought by Shell.

Via tracking tool Marine Traffic, we can see it leave Yamal LNG’s port, Sabetta, then wait for an Atomflot icebreaker (blue arrow), which leads it through the ice to open waters.
February 10, 2025 at 9:28 AM
Nuclear icebreakers are used when ice is so thick, even special ice-class vessels struggle to get through unassisted – which is the case from December to May around Russian gas plant Yamal LNG, the first gas facility inside the Arctic circle.
February 10, 2025 at 9:28 AM
This is a nuclear-powered icebreaker, operated by a state-owned Russian company called Atomflot.

Atomflot has been sanctioned by the EU, UK and US since 2023.

There is no suggestion that Shell or any of the European companies made direct payments to Atomflot - this would be a clear breach of sanctions.

But the investigation reveals the vital role the company plays in ensuring Russian LNG continues to reach European terminals.

We identified almost 120 other cargoes of LNG delivered from the Russian Arctic to European ports. We tracked a sample of these and found that 77% were escorted by Atomflot's icebreakers through icy waters at the start of their journey to Europe.
February 9, 2025 at 5:30 PM
We found five cargoes destined for Shell that sailed in direct convoy with nuclear-powered icebreakers owned by the Russian government and operated by Atomflot, which is sanctioned by the UK, EU and US

The LNG tanker delivering to Shell is red, the Atomflot icebreaker is blue:

Amazon deforestation by presidency, from @hannahritchie.bsky.social's latest newsletter: substack.com/home/post/p-...

Deforestation doubled under Bolsonaro, and has halved since the start of Lula's third term (it fell 75% during his first two terms). Lula's goal is zero deforestation by 2030.

ICYMI: When a pesticide is banned for risk to human health/nature in the UK, the ban does not cover production or export, leaving firms free to keep making these products for sale in countries with weaker regulations. In 2023 the UK exported 8500 tonnes of banned pesticides. https://buff.ly/4inSaN5
