I think I first noticed it around the turn of the century. It’s probably due to a need to attract more users by providing a welcoming Third Space™️ for community-building in an increasingly digital world, as well as councils needing to rationalise their funds for buildings and maintenance.

I remember a conversation I once had with an economist friend. He said too much discussion about saving insects was stunting industrial progress. He felt we should be glad that there fewer insects to bother us. I had to go back to primary school level predator pyramid/food web models to explain. 🙄
